MANKATO, Minn--- The Minnesota State men's track and field team opened its 2015-16 indoor season with the Chuck Petersen Open Saturday at Myers Field House in Mankato.
The meet started out with
Myles Hunter winning the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.86 which automatically qualifies him for nationals with
Ben Ojika (8.43) and
Zechariah Copeland (8.52) finishing in third and fifth, respectively. In the 60-meter dash,
Kyran Stewart (unattached) won with a time of 6.85, which meets the provisional time for nationals. Rounding out the top-five in the race was
Jake Gourley (unattached) (6.94),
Richard Wilhite, Jr. (9.94),
Geno Bullard (7.03), and
Javontee Brice (7.07) to cap off Minnesota State's dominance.
Success would run wild throughout the day as numerous Mavericks topped the charts. Wilhite
and Gourley took the tops spots in the 200-meter dash with times of 22.04 and 22.35. They were followed by Brice in third (22.59) and freshman
Ryan Immkeer (22.70). The 400-meters saw similar success as three freshman took the top spots for MSU.
John Schuster won with a time of 49.74. He was followed by
Reid Diamond (50.16) and
Joe Williams (51.27) in second and third. The 300-meter dash was won by Stewart with a time of 35.73.
Matt Stocker (unattached) won the 3000-meter race with a mark of 8:49.42.
The strong day on the track for the Mavericks would end with the 4x400 relay team of Brice, Diamond,
Schuster, and
Immeker dashing to the finish line with a time of 3:26.77.
Junior
Frank Veldman finished first in the high jump with a leap of 2.05 meters.
Alex Campbell was right behind him with a jump of (2.00 meters) to finish second.
Darrius Brown also came in third-place during the pole vault reaching a height of 4.56 meters. Campbell took home first place in the triple jump (14.20 meters). Placing in third was
Jeff DeCock with a jump of 13.43 meters.
The field events rounded out with junior
Bryan Caffin winning the weight throw with a distance of 16.74 meters with
Sam Udermann placing second (15.28 meters). Caffin also won the shot put with a throw of 15.10 meters, respectively.
Minnesota State will not return to action until January 9, 2016 for the MSU Alumni Open in Mankato at Myers Field House.
