Duluth, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team scored two goals in the third period, but that was not enough as the Mavericks saw their fourth loss of the 2015 season.
Minnesota Duluth took a lead early on in the opening period of the contest Friday night. The Bulldog goal stemmed from a hooking infraction committed by Maverick freshman forward
Emily Harris
(Littleton, Colo.) at the 3:05 mark. The play started when UMD's Maria Lind passed the puck to Demi Crossman in the slot who then dished it down to Katherine McGovern on the right post. McGovern was then able to sneak the puck past MSU junior goaltender,
Brianna Quade's
(Newcastle, Ont.) glove on the bottom of the right post, just 4:47 into the frame. Minnesota Duluth took the 1-0 lead into the second frame with an 18-4 shots on goal advantage over Minnesota State. MSU was unable to capitalize on their one power-play opportunity in the period while UMD went 1-2.
The second period showed a more balanced effort as the The Bulldogs accumulated 11 shots over the 20 minute span while MSU generated 6, for a total count of 29-10 in UMD's favor. At the 4:14 mark, senior forward
Katie Johnson
(Anoka, Minn.) beat the UMD defenders for a breakaway opportunity, but was hauled down on the play. She was awarded a penalty-shot, but was denied on the chance at an attempt to beat Bulldog goaltender Maddie Rooney via five-hole. Then, at 15:37, Minnesota Duluth thought they had increased their margin. The Bulldogs found a loose puck on the left side of the goal and shot at the open net. Quade made an unbelievable stop with the extension of her glove before the puck was able to cross the goalline. The play was reviewed and ultimately ruled no goal., Minnesota State ended the period unable to take advantage of their lone power-play opportunity, while the Bulldogs were held off from scoring on the power-play in the period, going 0-2.
Just 41 seconds into the third stanza, Minnesota State sophomore defenseman
Anna Keys
(Cottage Grove, Minn.) was sent to the penalty box for slashing, giving the Bulldogs their fifth power-play of the night. UMD forward Lara Stalder, was able to blast a close-range slapper past Quade's blocker, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Then at 9:57, MSU saw their first goal of the game as sophomore forward
Amanda Conway
(Naperville, Ill.) brought the puck up the right side-boards in the offensive zone. Conway was fed by junior defenseman
Anna Fiegert
(Landshut, Germany) and danced her way past a Bulldog defender and slid the puck through the legs of UMD goaltender Maddie Rooney. Over the next five minutes of action, Minnesota Duluth cemented their victory by scoring twice more. UMD's Morgan Morse picked up a rebound and banked the puck off of Quade on the short side while Cathrine Daoust netted the Bulldogs' final tally of the game at 15:29., In the final minute, Maverick freshman
Emily Antony
(Plymouth, Minn.) found the back of the net, scoring the first goal of her career. Keys dished the puck over to freshman
Leila Kilduff
(San Jose, Calif.) who passed the puck to Antony at the right of the slot., Antony then sniped the puck up over the right shoulder of Rooney for the game's final tally.
By the time the final buzzer sounded, MSU had been out-shot by a margin of 41-12. Quade recorded 37 saves on the night, two short of her season high of 39 stops and moves her record to 2-4-1 on the year. The Mavericks countered on one of their four power-plays while the Bulldogs capitalized twice in six times they had the extra-attacker advantage.
