Duluth, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team suffered its second sweep of the season, vs. Minnesota Duluth this weekend with the final score of the second game ending at 4-0.
Though the first period of action saw a shots on goal mark in favor of the Bulldogs at 11-4, the play of the game was much more even. Neither team was able to put one past their opposing goaltender as the score finished at 0-0 at the end of the frame. Each team came away with one penalty as the first 20 minutes expired.
The second period played out much like the first with UMD accumulating 16 shots and Minnesota State with five. The only difference was the two loose puck opportunities that Minnesota Duluth capitalized on. At 12:54, UMD's Sidney Morin and Michelle Lowenhielm took consecutive shots that eventually bounced out to Maria Lindh who tapped the puck in on the lower left side of the net to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Just under three minutes later at 15:51, another scramble played out in front of Minnesota State's junior goaltender
Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.). Bulldog center Michela Cava carried the puck to the slot and beat a screened Quade on the glove side, giving Minnesota Duluth a two-goal advantage heading into the third period.
The third period played even keel up until the 13:24 mark when Bulldogs' Kathrine McGovern passed the puck out from below the Maverick goalline out to Maria Lindh in the slot who beat Quade on the glove side. Then one minute later, Michela Cava grabbed a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated down the left side of MSU's zone and made a move to the front of the net where she slid the puck past Quade, to increase UMD's lead to 4-0.
By the time the final buzzer sounded, MSU had been out-shot by a margin of 34-14. Quade recorded 30 saves on the afternoon and moved her record to 2-5-1 on the year while UMD's Maddie Rooney totaled 14 stops and increased her record to 2-2-0 on the year. Both Minnesota State and Minnesota Duluth were unable to counter on each of their power-play opportunities going 0-1.
Minnesota State (2-5-1, 0-4-0 WCHA), will travel to Columbus, Ohio to finish out their four-game road stand next weekend, October 23rd and 24th as they take on Ohio State.
