MANKATO, Minn. --- The top-rated Minnesota State football team continues its season on the road Saturday as it takes on the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
Our History: The 2015 season marks the school's 89th season playing football. The Mavericks are 426-378-28 (.530) in 832 games since their inception as a varsity sport in 1922. Minnesota State is in its eighth season in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and owns a 68-9 (.881) record in league action. Over the course of its history, MSU has claimed 20 conference championships, including 16 NIC titles. Last season, the Mavericks claimed their second straight NSIC title and third in the last four seasons.
Grabbing the Reigns: The 2015 season marks the sixth season with head coach
Todd Hoffner on the sidelines. During his six seasons at Minnesota State, Hoffner has compiled a 54-14 (.794) record, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2008, 2009 and 2014.
Against the Golden Bears: Saturday's game with Concordia-St. Paul will mark the 10th all-time meeting between them, with MSU leading the all-time series 7-2. The Mavericks have won the last four encounters against CSP, including a 38-6 win at Blakeslee Stadium last season. MSU is 3-1 against the Golden Bears on the road, including a 27-7 win during the 2013 season.
Last year, junior
Ricky Lloyd threw one touchdown pass, while four different Mavericks ran in a touchdown. Seniors
Kyle Riggott and
Connor Thomas each ran in a touchdown, with Thomas leading the Maverick rushing attack with 145 rushing yards.
The Maverick defense also came away with three takeaways. Sophomore
Corey Brent recorded an interception, while senior
Bryce Dominick recovered a fumble. Senior
Tyler Henderson led the Mavericks with 10 tackles as well. As a unit, the Maverick defense tallied a total of seven quarterback sacks
Concerning the Mavericks: Minnesota State remained perfect on the season as it defeated Augustana 35-27 in its annual homecoming game to move to 6-0 on the season. MSU has now defeated Augustana in their last five meetings.
Sophomore wide receiver
Ty Dennis posted a new career-high of 153 receiving yards against the Vikings, to go along with a pair of touchdown catches. He is currently leading the MSU receiving corps with 429 receiving yards and five touchdown grabs, with senior
Kyle Riggott following with 17 catches and 267 receiving yards.
Senior
Connor Thomas added 95 rushing yards and a touchdown against the Vikings, while junior Ricky Lloyd tallied 192 passing yards and three touchdown passes.
The Maverick defense held the Vikings to just 26 rushing yards in its victory last weekend, to go along with eight sacks. Senior
Josh Gordon led the Maverick defense with eight tackles and four sacks, to go along with two forced fumbles. Senior
Tyler Henderson, who also posted eight tackles and a sack against the Vikings, is leading MSU with 41 tackles this season.
Concerning the Golden Bears: The Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears enter the weekend the owners of a 1-5 record. CSP has lost its last three games to Bemidji State (47-7), Winona State (51-7) and Upper Iowa (52-20). Through six games this season the Golden Bears are averaging 16.7 points per game, while giving up 36.8 points per game.
Alex Carr is leading the CSP rushing attack with 235 rushing yards, while Darius Chapes has rushed in two touchdowns. Ben Schramski has also thrown for 777 yards and five touchdowns, compared to five interceptions.
Jordan Halverson leads the CSP defense with 58 tackles, while Josh Trifunov leads the Golden Bears with seven sacks. DeCeon has notched two interceptions and has defended seven passes.
Ryan Williams is in his fifth season at the helm of the Concordia-St. Paul football program. He currently owns a 19-31 record.
