Four First-Place Finishes Cap Successful Weekend for Mavericks

MANKATO, Minn. --- For the second week in a row, the men's 60-meter dash school record fell due to senior Emmanuel Matadi (St. Paul, Minn.).

In both the prelims and semi-finals, Matadi broke his record from last week posting 6.68 both times. Less than two hours later, Matadi posted an incredible 6.66 in the finals which currently ranks him first in Division II and within the top 15 across all divisions. Not to be forgotten, teammate Richard Wilhite, Jr. (Minneapolis, Minn.) finished in 6.97, which was good enough for sixth.

In a very competitive 200-meters, senior Anthony Gustafson (Faribault, Minn.) lead the Mavericks in seventh-place posting a time 22.68. The 400-meters also featured a couple top-ten finishes for MSU with Javontee Brice (Bradenton, Fla.) taking home third with a time of 50.35. Teammate Zach Gearman (Burnsville, Minn.) followed in fifth with a posting of 50.59.

Freshman Brendan Gessner (Lino Lakes, Minn) found himself in fifth during the 800-meters with a final time 1:59.52. Austin Pasch (Tomah, Wis) finished in 2:32.64 during the 1000-meters with Matthew Stocker (Salon, Iowa) right behind in sixth. Senior Austin O'Brien (Bettendorf, Iowa) secured the second Maverick victory with a first-place posting in the mile at 4:17.21. Josiah Swanson (Fond du Lac, Wis.) followed the trend in the 3000-meters with a first-place time of 8:48.86.

The 60-meter hurdle event saw yet another MSU first-place crown with Myles Hunter (Conyers, Ga.) finishing in 7.91 during the finals. Teammate Zechariah Copeland (Brookfield, Wis) followed in seventh-place.

On the field side of the day, Sophomore Frank Veldman (Eagan, Minn.) finished the high jump in third with a leap of 6'6.75". The long jump saw similar success with Mavericks occupying spots two, four and five. Geno Bullard topped the group at 22'6.25" with Rumeal Harris (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Alex Campbell (Ellsworth, Wis.) behind.

Wrapping up the field events, Bryan Caffin (Hudson, Wis.) finished the shot put in fifth-place with a toss of 47'0.25".

The events on Saturday also featured the conclusion of the men's heptahlon. Sophomore Ben Ojika (New Brighton, Minn.) finished his two-day action in sixth place with 3905 points.
