The Mavericks Keep Things Rolling at the MSU Alumni Open

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's track and field team saw their success from last month continue over at the MSU Alumni Open.

The afternoon got off to a fast start as junior Kyran Stewart took home the first-place crown in the 60-meter dash posting a time of 6.87 with fellow junior Richard Wilhite coming in fourth. Freshman Zecheriah Copeland also finished in fourth in the 60-meter hurdles event. Senior Emmanuel Matadi and Stewart went first and second in the 200-meters posting times of 21.30 and 21.43, respectively. Both marks met the provisional qualifying standards for the national meet and are also the top-two times currently across all of Division II.

Senior Zach Gearman won the 400-meters with a time of 50.35 with freshman Javontee Brice right behind at 51.07. The top spot in the mile went to senior Austin O'Brien who finished in 4:21.79. Fellow senior Josiah Swanson and junior Ryan Ness came in third and fourth, respectively. Two freshman led the Mavericks in the 1000-meters as Brendan Gossner took home fourth at 2:40.97 and Michael Hoff right behind. Another newcomer, Austin Pasch, finished in third-place in the 3000-meters with a time of 9:00.77.

Ben Ojika saw his second-place jump of 6'8.75" mark as a provisional qualifier in the high jump with fellow sophomore Frank Veldman right behind in third at 6'6.75".

Freshman Geno Bullard also reached a provisional qualifying standard in the long jump at 23'5.25" with sophomore Michael Sandle behind in third-place at 22'8.5". Sandle would go on to dominate the triple jump with a mark of 50'5.25", which is currently the top spot across Division II so far this season. Senior Khalil Jor'dan would join Sandle with provisional qualifying marks with his second-place jump of 47'2.25".

The day would finish up with sophomore Bryan Caffin placing sixth in the shot put with a mark of 46'10.75" and again finishing third in the weight throw with a toss of 50'5.25.

The Mavericks will be back in action next weekend with participants going to the Holiday Inn Invitational in Lincoln, Neb, and the Northwest Open in Minneapolis, Minn.
