Mavericks Dispatch Minnesota Crookston to Complete Series Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MANKATO, Minn. --- Third-ranked Minnesota State extended its winning streak to five straight games by completing a series sweep of Minnesota Crookston with a pair of victories in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Sunday afternoon at the MSU Baseball Complex.
 
The Mavericks topped UMC by margins of 13-2 and 18-4 to improve to 28-7 overall and 16-4 in conference play, while the Golden Eagles slipped to 1-29 on the year and 0-18 within the NSIC.
 
In game one, MSU got on the scoreboard in the top of the second with junior Connor McCallum singling down the right field line and then advancing to third on another single by senior Parker Sullivan. Sullivan got caught in a rundown but not before McCallum scored to give MSU the lead at 1-0.
 
The Purple and Gold pushed two more runs across in third before opening up the floodgates in the fifth scoring seven runs off four UMC errors. Senior Mike Andries reached on the first error to lead off the inning. The next batter, freshman Kevin Kramer, laid down a sacrifice bunt for a single and a throwing error by the third baseman allowed Andries and Kramer to go all the way around the bases giving the Mavericks a 5-0 advantage. Later in the inning, senior Stetson Olson hit a three-run bomb scoring McCallum and junior Nolan Johnson for his seventh four-bagger of the season.
 
MSU tacked on two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to take the first affair of the double header by a score of 13-2. Senior righthander T.J. Larson now stands 4-2 as he struck out seven batters giving up one run in five innings of work. Freshmen Lucas Henning and Mitchell Bauer each came in and pitched one inning. Henning faced four batters giving up two hits and one run, while Bauer set down all three batters faced.
 
The second game started in similar fashion with MSU scoring in the top of the second. After a leadoff single from McCallum, sophomore Taylor Branstad doubled down the left-field line scoring McCallum.
 
The next inning, MSU added three runs to bring the score to 4-0. Freshman Eric Peterson hit a single to left and stole second to get into scoring position. Senior Todd Standish then hit a double to center scoring Peterson, before Standish scored after a single by junior Max Waletich and a fielder's choice. Johnson scored the final run of the frame on a throwing error by the second baseman. The Mavericks allowed one run in the fourth inning but not before scoring two more runs in the top half of the inning to extend the lead to five.
 
In the sixth inning, the Purple and Gold tagged a six spot on the scoreboard kicked started by a two-run single up the middle from senior Parker Sullivan and a double from Standish that scored a pair. Sullivan and Standish added another RBI double each in the seventh inning giving the Mavericks a season-high 18 runs, before UMC tallied three in the bottom of the frame to complete the 18-4 final.
 
Senior righthander Taylor Nawrocki improved to 5-0 by matching a season-high seven strikeouts, scattering three hits and allowing an unearned run; while junior lefthander Matt Geislinger tossed an inning of scoreless relief.
 
The Mavericks will conclude their six-game home stand Tuesday with a doubleheader against Bemidji State slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.
