Mavericks and Huskies Skate to Overtime Tie

Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- 17th-ranked Minnesota State and Michigan Tech skated to a 1-1 overtime tie Saturday evening to close out the 2013-14 regular season portion of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in front of 4,012 fans at Verizon Wireless Center.

With the tie, Minnesota State finishes second in the league standings and will host a first-round WCHA tournament series next weekend. The Mavericks are now forced await the conclusion of the rest of tonight's league games before knowing who it will face.

The standstill marked the first time this season that Minnesota State skated to a tie.

Michigan Tech opened the game with a goal at the 6:55 mark as Shane Hanna scored on a shot from the slot.

After a scoreless second period, sophomore Bryce Gervais one-timed a pass from freshman defenseman Sean Flanagan to neutralize the game at one at the 7:07 mark of the third period. The goal was Gervais' 12th of the season and the 20th of his career.

The two teams then skated through a scoreless overtime.

The game finished with both teams recording 26 shots on net as MSU sophomore goaltender Cole Huggins stopped 25 shots while MTU's netminder Pheonix Copley also registered 25 saves.

The tie pushed MSU's unbeaten streak to nine games as the Mavericks take a 21-13-1 record into the postseason. In league play, MSU finished 19-7-1.
