Marei, Monaghan and Margenthaler Earn NABC Central District Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. --- Minnesota State juniors Assem Marei and Zach Monaghan, along with head coach Matt Margenthaler received NABC Central District honors Wednesday.

Marei and Monaghan were named to the NABC All-Central District First Team, while Margenthaler was named the NABC Central District Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

A forward out of Cairo, Egypt, Marei led the Mavericks in scoring and rebounds with 16.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He also led the Mavericks with 53 blocks, while shooting 59% from the field.

Through 32 games, Marei notched 10 double-doubles and scored at least 11 points in 27 games this past season. He was named to the All-NSIC First Team and the Daktronics All-Central Region First Team earlier this season.

A guard out of Palatine, Ill., Monaghan started all 35 games for MSU this past season as he averaged 15.4 points and a nation-high 8.1 assists per game. He tallied nine double-doubles on the season and led the Mavericks with 64 steals.

Through 35 games, Monaghan established a new single-season record with 282 assists. He was named the NSIC Player of the Year and the Daktronics Central Region Player of the Year.

Margenthaler, who earned his fourth NSIC Coach of the Year award earlier this season, guided the Mavericks to a 30-5 record, setting a new single-season record for wins in a season. He oversaw back-to-back NSIC Regular Season and Tournament championships as the Mavericks finished their conference season with a 19-3 record.

As a team, MSU sat atop the NSIC is several categories including scoring (84.9 ppg), scoring margin (+16.2), three point field goal percentage (39.8%) and assists (17.14 apg). Margenthaler is now tied with former MSU coach Dan McCarrell for the most coaching wins at Minnesota State with 284.

Minnesota State finished its 2013-14 season with a 30-5 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
