#19 Minnesota State Puts 11-Game Streak on the Line Against U-Mary

MANKATO, Minn. --- The No. 19 Minnesota State women's basketball team made slight work of the Minnesota Crookston Golde Eagles as it downed UMC, 106-63, in the opening round of the NSIC Tournament. 

With the win, MSU extends its winning streak to 11 games as it travels to Sioux Falls, S.D., to do battle with the University of Mary. The Mavericks sit 22-5 overall, while the Marauders enter the contest the owners of a 16-9 record. 
The Mavericks were led in the opening round of the contest by All-NSIC First Team selection Ali Wilkinson who posted a season-high 31 points. The Mavericks connected on 52% of their shots from the field and 50% (13-26) of their shots from behind the arc in the win.

Ali Wilkinson and Britney Scherber were honored by the NSIC earlier this week. Wilkinson was named All-NSIC First Team, while Scherber was named to the All-NSIC Freshmen Team.

Scouting the Mauraders: The University of Mary women's basketball team is under the guidance of second-year head coach Rick Neumann, who has amassed a 35-20 record in his head coaching tenure. The Marauders are 16-9 overall and finished 14-8.

U-Mary is averaging 74.2 points per game while giving up 73.8 points per contest. The Marauders are led by Linda Murray and Brittney Dietz, who are averaging 16.3 and 15.5 points per game, respectively. 

The Mavericks downed the Marauders 84-68 on Jan. 31 in Taylor Center. MSU had three athletes reach double figures led by senior Karlee Gengenbacher who finished with a team-high 15 points. U-Mary was led by Linda Murray and Brittney Dietz who each dropped in 18 points. The Marauders were only able to connect on 15% (2-13) of their shots from behind the arc in the contest. 

Streaking Into the Postseason: Minnesota State takes its 11-game winning streak into the second round of the NSIC tournament. A season ago the Mavericks finished the regular season on an 11 game winning-streak as they entered the conference tournament. 

Postseason Prognosis: The Mavericks earned the second seed into the NSIC conference tournament for the second-straight year. A season ago, the Mavericks advanced to the NSIC Conference Championship where they fell to Augustana, 81-73.

Looking Back: The Mavericks are riding an 11-game winning streak as they downed Minnesota Crookston, 106-63, in the opening round of the NSIC Tournament. MSU finished the NSIC circuit with an 18-4 conference record for the second-straight season under second-year head coach Emilee Thiesse.

Regionally Ranked: The Mavericks dropped a spot to No. 6 in the NCAA Central Region. Harding and Emporia State sit atop the regional rankings. The central region is comprised of the Great American Conference (GAC), the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The top eight teams in the final ranking will receive a berth into the NCAA Central Region tournament with the three conference champions receiving an automatic bid to the tournament. 

Nationally-Known: The Mavericks are currently fourth in the nation in turnover margin (+7.4), eighth in points per game (83.0), 13th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.19), 14th in scoring margin (+16.9) and 15th in steals (11.5 per game). Individually, junior Aubrey Davis is 15th in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.08) and senior Ali Wilkinson is 40th in field goal percentage (54%). Wilkinson's 17.5 points per game ranks her fourth in the conference and 69th nationally.

Good Work!: Ali Wilkinson was one of 10 women's basketball players to be recognized by the WBCA and Allstate and was named to the 2014 Good Works Team for her community service off the court.

You Got Game: Senior Ali Wilkinson is three games away from the most games play in program history. Lori Kramer currently holds the program record with 123 games  played.

100: Senior forward Ali Wilkinson has competed in 120 games for the Mavericks. During those games, Wilkinson has started 89 and is shooting 51% from the field while  averaging 13.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
