MANKATO, Minn. --- The No. 21 Minnesota State women's basketball team takes for the road for the final two weekends of the regular season and will tip things off against Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston this weekend.
The Mavericks are riding a six game winning streak dating back to Jan. 24 when they downed Winona State on the road. The Mavericks are currently tied for third in the NSIC overall standings and tied for second in the South Division with Concordia-St. Paul, which MSU holds the tie-breaker on. The Mavericks will host the opening round of the NSIC tournament in Taylor Center on Feb. 26.
The Mavericks concluded a four-game homestand with an unblemished mark of 4-0. Most recently, MSU downed Southwest Minnesota State and the University of Sioux Falls by scores of 85-63 and 79-52, respectively.
The senior duo of Karlee Gengenbacher and Ali Wilkinson paced the Mavericks this past weekend, finishing with 18.5 points and 13.5 points per game, respectively. Collectively, the Mavericks shot 42% from the field and 31% from behind the arc. MSU averaged a +24.5 advantage in the scoring column, a +5 average on the glass and +9.5 turnovers in the two contests.
Scouting the Beavers: The Beavers are coached by Mike Curfman who is in his ninth year as head women's basketball coach for BSU. Curfman has directed Bemidji State University to a 90-150 overall record (.346) in his eight seasons while posting a 54-121 (.308) mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
BSU is led by Morgan Lee who is one of three Beavers averaging double-figures with 17.6 points per game. As a unit, BSU is averaging 71.1 points per game and surrendering 75.5.
The Beavers enter this weekend on a seven game skid with their most recent losses coming to Minot and U-Mary, by scores of 74-66 and 71-67, respectively.
Scouting the Golden Eagles: Mike Roysland enters his seventh year leading the University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team heading into the 2013-14 season. Roysland has accumulated 64 wins in his first six seasons leading the Golden Eagle program.
UMC is led by Katrina Moenkedick, who is averaging 16.0 points per contest and is one of two Golden Eagle to average double figures.
Collectively, UMC is averaging 72.6 points per contest, while allowing its opponents to net an average of 72.8 points per game.
Looking Back: The Mavericks extended their winning streak to six games and started a new Taylor Center winning streak as they downed Southwest Minnesota State, 85-63, on Friday, before earning a 79-52 win over Minot State Saturday. On the weekend, MSU earned a +9.5 turnover margin in the pair of wins.
Nationally-Known: The Mavericks are currently 11th in the nation with a 1.2 assist to turnover ratio and 15th in the nation in assists per game, averaging 17.8 per contest. Individually, sophomore Aubrey Davis is 28th in the nation sporting a 1.97 assist-to-turnover ratio. Ali Wilkinson's 18.2 points per game is the second-best average in the NSIC and 46th-best in the country. Collectively, the Mavericks 82.9 points per game is the seventh-best average in all of Division II, while they sport the fifth-best turnover margin averaging a +6.95 turnover margin.
Good Work!: Ali Wilkinson was one of 10 women's basketball players to be recognized by the WBCA and Allstate and was named to the 2014 Good Works Team for her community service off of the court.
100: Senior forward Ali Wilkinson has competed in 115 games for the Mavericks. During those games, Wilkinson has started 84 and is shooting 51% from the field and averaging 13.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
Your Language is Offensive: The Mavericks currently boast the league's top-scoring attack, averaging 82.9 points per game, which ranks them seventh in the nation. MSU has had five 100-plus point games this season tying the 2007-08 team for the most triple-digit games in a season in program history.
In the Polls: The Minnesota State University women's basketball team jumped two spots to No. 21 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Top-25 Poll released Feb. 11. The Mavericks finished the 2012-13 campaign ranked No. 17, which was a season-high.
The No. 12 ranking on Dec. 10 marked the highest WBCA ranking under second-year head coach Emilee Thiesse.
