BEMIDJI, Minn. --- Minnesota State led after the first period of play 2-1, but #9 Bemidji State scored a flurry of goals in the second period to defeat the Mavericks 7-4 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action on Friday night at Sanford Center.
The Mavericks drop to 0-14-1 overall and 0-12-1 in Western Collegiat
e Hockey Association play this season. The Beavers improve to 9-5-1 and 5-5-1 in the WCHA.
The Mavericks came out of the gates gunning as they scored 1:01 into to opening frame. Freshman
Amanda Conway was back behind the net and snuck a pass out in front finding junior
Katie Johnson who beat Bemidji State goaltender Brittni Mowat over her right shoulder. The Beavers answered back at 10:14 as Ivana Bilic took a shot from the slot to even the score. Just eleven seconds later freshman
Hannah Davidson gave the Mavericks a 2-1 lead. After a scrum in front of the net the puck squirted out to Davidson at the right post and she snuck it in for her second goal of the year.
The Beavers stormed back in the second period as four different players scored to take the lead 5-2 after two periods of play with one of the goals coming on the power-play at 6:28 of the period. At the 17 minute mark Ivana Bilic took a shot that deflected off of Hanna Moher and bounced off the helmet and shoulder of junior goaltender
Erin Krichiver and into the back of the net. The final goal of the period came just 17 seconds later as Lauren Miller tipped in a shot past Krichiver.
In the final period BSU added another goal in the first minute of the period. Alexis Joyce was able to get into the front of the net and blast a shot into the upper right corner of the net to bring the score to 6-2. Kaitlyn Tougas added her second goal of the game at 8:45 of the stanza as she sped by the defense and beat Quade glove side. The Mavericks would not be done scoring on the night though. Johnson added her second goal of the game as she took a shot from the slot that found the back of the net. With just a few seconds remaining senior
Shelby Moteyunas found the scoring column as she took a shot from just inside the blue line to bring the final score to 7-4 in favor of BSU.
Krichiver made 27 saves on the night giving up five goals. She receives the loss and drops to 0-10-1 on the year. Sophomore
Brianna Quade played the final 20 minutes giving up 2 goals and producing five saves.
The Beavers had a slight edge on shots having 39 compared to the Mavericks 32. MSU went 0-3 with the extra skater advantage while BSU went 1-2.
Minnesota State will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they finish the two-game set with Bemidji State at 4:07 p.m at Sanford Center.
