#1 Minnesota State Set to Battle Bemidji State in First Round of the NSIC Tournament

What's On Tap: After wrapping up the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Regular Season Championship last weekend, the Mavericks jump back into action as they host the eighth-seeded Bemidji State Beavers Wednesday afternoon at The Pitch in the opening round of the NSIC/US Bank Tournament. The opening kick is set for 1 p.m.

Minnesota State finished the regular season undefeated for the first time in program history with an overall record of 18-0-0 and 15-0-0 NSIC record. The 18 wins surpasses the most wins in a single season for the Mavericks as well.
 
Looking Back at Last Week: The Mavericks traveled to Upper Iowa on Friday afternoon and defeated the Peacocks 4-1 behind junior Korey Kronforst second career hat trick. On Sunday they traveled back home and defeated Winona State on senior day, 2-0.

Minnesota State battled through the wind and the cold on Friday against Upper Iowa scoring just four minutes into the match as senior Emily Moris found herself wide open in front of the goal scoring off a pass from Kronforst to give MSU an early lead. Senior Breanna Steele was given a free kick just inside of the midfield line and booted a pass that found sophomore Dana Savino who found Kronforst in front of the net to put the Mavericks up 2-0. The Peacocks answered back quickly but Kronforst added two more goals in the second half to solidify the win.

Senior Molly McGough made a couple of great saves producing another shutout and in the process breaking the NSIC career shutout record in her last chance to do so. Moris tallied her sixth goal of the season while sophomore Kiana Nickel produced her ninth of the season to lead the Mavericks past Winona State.

Scouting the Beavers: Bemidji State finished the regular season with an overall record of  9-8-1 and a league ledger of 8-6-1. They are coming off a weekend in which they lost to Minnesota Duluth 2-0 and St. Cloud State 1-0.

Head coach Jim Stone is in his 13th year at the helm of the Beaver's program and owns an overall record of 134-103-24. He is also the winningest coach in program history. The Beavers are led by sophomore Sarah Stram (F, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) who has produced 12 goals and six assists for 30 points. Fellow sophomore Bayley Ertl (F, North Branch, Minn.) and freshman Raquel Thelen (F, Andover, Minn.) have both amassed double-digits in points as well. Senior Sonja Barr (GK, Duluth, Minn.) has started in 15 games and owns a record of 8-7-1, produceding five shutouts. She has 84 saves with a save percentage of .840 and a goals against average of 1.00.

The Beavers have outscored their opponents 33-22 averaging 1.83 goals per game. They are averaging 12.4 shots per game while allowing 14.8.

Minnesota State in the NSIC Tournament: The Mavericks are looking to win back-to-back NSIC Tournament titles for the first time in program history. MSU has won the postseason tournament championship in 2008, 2011 and 2013.

Inside the MSU vs. BSU Series: MSU leads the all-time series against BSU with a record of 9-1-1. The Mavericks dropped the Beavers earlier this season by a score of 4-1. Korey Kronforst scored twice in the win while Jessica Bowe and Dana Savinoeach tallied a score of their own.

Program History: The 2014 season marks the 20th year of women's soccer as a varsity sport at Minnesota State. MSU claimed its third-straight NSIC regular-season championship this season after capturing NCC regular-season crowns in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2007.  The Mavericks currently hold a 258-109-27 (.688) all-time record and 79-11-1 (.847) all-time mark in seven seasons in the NSIC. MSU has posted 17 consecutive winning seasons dating back to 1998.
