MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. --- Minnesota State Junior goaltender
Erin Krichiver was busy all night stopping 48 total shots on goal, but that wasn't enough as the Mavericks were upended four goals to zero by the nation's second rated team.
The Mavericks drop to 0-13-1 overall and 0-11-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play this season. The Gophers improve to 11-1-2 and 9-1-2 in the WCHA.
The Gophers first line came out of the gates flying scoring all three goals in the first period. Dani Cameranesi and Maryanne Menefee were able to tuck the puck under Maverick junior netminder Krichiver's blocker in the first three minutes of the game and coming within 26 seconds of each other. The third and what proved to be the final goal of the frame came at the 10:19 mark when Gopher forward Hanna Brandt came down on a one-on-one and was able to wrist the puck past the right side of a screened Krichiver. Shots on goal for the period favored Minnesota 15-2.
The Gophers were able to build on their lead in the second stanza on the power-play to give Minnesota a 4-0 advantage. Rachael Bona scored the lone goal of the of period taking a pass from Kate Schipper on the left side of the offensive zone and sniping the puck past the lower glove side of Krichiver. The Mavericks goaltender stayed busy in the second period stopping 24 of 25 shots respectively.
In the final period, both teams were unable to bury the puck in the back of the net. After the loss, Krichiver falls to 0-9-1 on the season.
The Mavericks were unable to capitalize on the power play going zero for three in the loss while the Gophers were one for three with the extra skater. MSU totaled 13 shots on goal while Minnesota tallied 52 of their own in front of a crowd of 2,499 at Ridder Arena.
Minnesota State's next action will be two weekends from now as they travel north to take on WCHA opponent the Bemidji State University Beavers on December 5th and 6th, respectively.
