Mavericks Complete Sweep by Skating Past #1 Huskies 3-2 Saturday

Box Score        Houghton, Mich. --- #9 Minnesota got key third-period goals from senior forwards Matt Leitner and Jean-Paul Lafontaine in skating to a 3-2 victory over number-one rated Michigan Tech in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest played in Houghton Saturday.

Coming on the heels of Friday's 2-1 win over the Huskies, Saturday's win cemented the road sweep for the Mavericks.

Following an opening period in which neither team was able to find the back of the net, the Huskies struck first on a goal by Alex Petan at 5:29.  Then, at 7:22, Minnesota State sophomore forward Jordan Nelson controlled the puck during a scramble in front of the MTU cage, using his right skate to kick it up to his stick before bumping it past Jamie Phillips for his second goal of the season.

Leitner gave the Mavericks their first lead on a backhander from the high slot that appeared to fool Phillips with Minnesota State on the power play at 1:35 of the final period.  Lafontaine got MSU's third goal on a wrap-around attempt at 7:32. The goal proved to be the game-winning marker - Lafontaine's first such goal of the year and the fourth game-winner of his career.  MTU's Malcolm Gould closed out the scoring when he connected on a power play at 16:48.

Both teams were one-for-six in power play chances on the night, while MTU owned a 27-23 advantage in shots on goal.

Minnesota State junior netminder Stephon Williams, who finished with 25 saves, improved his record to 9-1-0 in 2014-15.

Minnesota State has now won four games in a row and seven of its last eight.

The Mavericks are 9-3-0 for the season (7-1-0 in WCHA games) continue road league action next weekend with a pair of games at Lake Superior State.
