Mankato, Minn. – The Minnesota State women's basketball team beat Metropolitan State on Sunday evening by the score of 84-62.
With the win, the Mavericks improve their record to 2-0 on the short season.
In the first half, the Mavericks and Roadrunners were all tied at 5-5, before MSU went on 26-8 run to make the score 31-13. During the run, the Mavericks hit six threes including three from senior guard
Aubrey Davis. Throughout the rest of the first half MSU Denver was able to claw its way back into the game as the Roadrunners finished the half on a 22-8 run to make the halftime score, 39-35, with MSU up.
At the break, Davis led all scorers with 12 points, including 4-6 from behind the arc. Sophomore guard
Sammie Delzotto posted seven points and two assists in the half as senior guard
Ashley Olson recorded five points to her stat sheet.
MSU began the second half on a 12-4 run to push the Mavericks lead to 14, 53-49 at the 16:34 mark in the second half. Throughout the rest of the game, the Mavericks stayed in control as they kept building to their lead over the Roadrunners. MSU had as big of a lead of 27 at one point and the Mavericks went on to take the game at 84-62 over the Roadrunners.
In the second half, it was a balanced effort as five Mavericks scored at least five points in the half. Sophomore forward
Tyra Johnson led the way with nine points, with Olson posting another six points, as senior forward
Lexie Ulfers, freshman forward
Claire Ziegler and Delzotto each recorded five points.
As a team, the Mavericks tallied 10 three-pointers in the game, as Davis posted four from beyond the arc and Olson pitched in with two of her own. The Mavericks also forced 23 turnovers on the night.
Davis led all Mavericks in scoring, as the Bloomington, Minn. native chipped in with 15 points, four steals and three assists. Delzotto finished the game with 12 points and a team-high five assists, as Olson added 11 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals. Johnson ended with nine points as Ulfers tallied seven points, five rebounds and two assists.
The next time the Mavericks hit the court, will be in the UMSL Classic, down in St. Louis, Mo. MSU will do battle with Maryville on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
