St. Louis, Mo. – The Minnesota State women's basketball team topped Maryville by the score of 69-68, in late second fashion on Friday night.
The Mavericks were down 68-67 with 16 seconds left to go in the game before senior forward
Lexie Ulfers was able to put MSU up for good. Ulfers was able to haul in an offensive rebound off a missed shot from another Maverick player to get the game winning basket with four seconds left on the clock.
With the win, the Mavericks improve their record to 3-0 on the season.
With 11:32 left in the first half, the Mavericks were clinging on to a 16-15 advantage over the Saints before MSU was able to take control in the rest of the half. The Purple and Gold was able to finish the half on a 25-11 run against Maryville to go into the break. The Mavericks went into halftime leading, 41-26.
At the break, senior guard
Aubrey Davis posted team-highs with 10 points, four assists and three steals, to along with her three rebounds. Ulfers recorded eight points, as senior forward
Jamie Bresnahan tallied seven points, four points and one block. Sophomore guard
Sammie Delzotto led all Mavericks with five rebounds to go along with her six points at the break.
In the second half, the Saints came out firing on all cylinders as they began the half on a 30-5 run, to put MU up 56-46 over MSU at the 7:36 mark. However, MSU was able to claw its way back into the game as the Mavericks went on a 23-12 run of their own to close out the game with a 69-68 victory.
Senior guard
Ashley Olson led all Mavericks in second half as she posted 10 points, to go along with her three rebounds. Ulfers added another eight points and three rebounds, while Delzotto posted another four points and three rebounds to her stat sheet.
In a game that involved big runs by both teams and four lead changes, the Mavericks had a 15 point lead at one point, while the Saints largest lead was 11. MSU outscored MU in the paint and points off turnovers, as the Saints were able to outscore the Maverick bench 33-14.
Individually, four Mavericks scored at least 10 points, as Ulfers led the way with 16 points and four rebounds. Davis finished the game with 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Delzotto posted 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Olson added 10 points and three rebounds, as Bresnahan finished with nine points, five rebounds and two blocks.
The Mavericks will play the University of Missouri-St. Louis (USML) Saturday at 3 p.m. to conclude their time at the USML Classic.
