Minnesota State scored first and had the game tied twice, but could not hold off #20
th-rated Minnesota Duluth in falling to the Bulldogs 6-2 in Mankato in nonconference men's hockey action Saturday.
Dylan Margonari scored from a scrum in front on the UMD net at 6:03 for the first goal of the game and his first of the season and the Mavericks held a 1-0 edge at the end of the first period.
UMD tallied a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead in the second period when Kyle Osterberg scored at 1:49 and Carson Soucy at 12:35. Minnesota State senior forward Chase Grant got his second goal of the year at 17:04, making it a 2-2 game at the end of the middle stanza.
But a shorthanded goal by Dominic Toninato at 3:49 of the third proved to be the first of four unanswered tallies by the Bulldogs as UMD pulled away en route to the win. Jared Thomas scored a power play marker at 9:49 and then got another when he put the puck into an empty net with Maverick netminder Cole Huggins on the bench for an extra attacker at 15:29. Tony Cameranesi closed out the scoring at 19:48 with an empty net goal.
The Mavericks went zero-for- six in power play chances on the night, while UMD converted on one of six opportunities with the man advantage. Minnesota State owned a 38-20 advantage in shots on goal in the game.
The game was played in front of a record 5,375 fans at a standing-room only Verizon Wireless Center. The previous mark for the largest Minnesota State home men's hockey crowd was 5,201 vs. Minnesota, Jan. 30, 2009.
Minnesota State, which stands 2-2-0 for the season, hosts Alabama Huntsville next Friday and Saturday in its next action.
