MANKATO, Minn. --- The No.17 Minnesota State women's basketball team finished a three-game homestand unblemished and looks to build on it's momentum as it takes to the road for a pair of games against NSIC North Division foes Northern State and MSU Moorhead.
MSU is currently tied for second in the NSIC South Division standings, with Concordia-St. Paul, who the Mavericks hold the tie-breaker on. The Mavericks' 6-2 NSIC record has them in a three-way tie for second place in the NSIC standings with Northern State and Concordia-St. Paul.
The Mavericks finished the 2013 portion of their schedule with an 80-67 win over Concordia-St. Paul. MSU opened 2014 with a 100-66 win over St. Cloud State, marking the fifth time the Mavericks have scored at least 100 points this season, tying the 2007-08 squad for most triple digit games in a season. The Mavericks overcame a nine-point deficit against the University of Minnesota Duluth to earn the 69-66 win, improving their home winning streak to a program-best 23 games.
Senior forward Ali Wilkinson (Blue Mounds, Wis.) picked up right where she left off, netting 19 points and six rebounds against St. Cloud State. Against the Bulldogs, Wilkinson was held scoreless in the first half before surging in the second half to score a game-high 21 points on a 7-11 shooting performance from the field including one three-pointer and a perfect 6-of-6 effort from the charity stripe in addition to nine rebounds, one shy of her 30th career double-double.
Scouting the Wolves: Northern State is currently leading the North Division with a 10-2 record, including a mark of 6-2 in NSIC action. The Wolves' two losses came at the hands of Minot State and the University of Mary, by scores of 75-68 and 87-83, respectively.
NSU is coached by Curt Fredrickson, who has amassed over 723 wins, and holds the second-most wins by active Division II women's basketball coaches. The Wolves finished with a 16-12 record last season and were ousted by Concordia-St. Paul in the NSIC Tournament.
Northern State has three starters averaging double figures, led by junior Rachel Krogman, with 16.3 points per game. Senior Alison Kusler and junior Megan Mutchler average 16.0 and 12.1 points per game, respectively.
Scouting the Dragons: MSU Moorhead currently sits tied for third in the NSIC North Division Standings, going 4-4 on the circuit, and is 8-4 overall.
The Dragons are coached by Karla Nelson, who is in her 14th season at the helm of the MSU Moorhead women's basketball program.
MSU Moorhead is led by Morgan Zabel who is netting 15.3 points per game, she is joined in double figures by Meghan Roehrich and Megan Strese, who average 12.9 and 11.5 points per game, respectively.
Nationally-Known: The Mavericks are currently 17th in the nation with a 1.17 assist to turnover ratio, 15th in the nation in assists per game, averaging 18.3 per contest. Individually, sophomore Aubrey Davis is seventh in the nation, sporting a 2.67 assist to turnover ratio. Ali Wilkinson's 20.1 points per game, is the 33rd-best average in the country.
100: Senior forward Ali Wilkinson has competed in 105 games for the Mavericks. During those those 105 games, Wilkinson has started 74, and is shooting 51% from the field and averaging 13.1 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game.
Your Language is Offensive: The Mavericks currently boast the leagues top-scoring offensive attack, averaging 84.9 points per game, which ranks them eighth in the nation. MSU has had five 100-plus point games this season, tying the 2007-08 team for the most triple digit games in a season in program history.
In the Polls: The Minnesota State University women's basketball team jumped seven spots to No. 17 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Top-25 Poll released Jan. 7, the Mavericks finished the 2012-13 campaign ranked No. 17, which was a season-high.
The No. 12 ranking on Dec. 10 marked the highest WBCA ranking under second-year head coach Emilee Thiesse.
