The Mavericks, who had dropped a 4-2 decision to the Nanooks Friday, salvaged a split of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series with Saturday's win.

Junior forward Jean-Paul Lafontaine gave the Mavericks their first lead at 1:25 of the second period after taking the puck from behind the UA net out into the front before beating Davis Jones for his ninth goal of the season. Lafontaine got his team-high tenth of the year with the Mavericks on the power play at 9:54 when he directed Matt Leitner's pass from the side past Jones in making it a two-goal MSU lead. The Nanooks pulled within one with a power play of their own at 18:09 and after two periods of play, the Mavericks held a 3-2 advantage.

A five-goal onslaught followed in the final period. Junior forward Chase Grant tallied at 10:22 and after Alaska responded on the power play 23 seconds later, junior forward Max Gaede got his first goal of the season on a one-timer at 12:23 to make it 5-3 in favor of Minnesota State.
