Box Score MANKATO, Minn. --- The No. 22 Mavericks 24-game home winning streak came to an end Saturday at Taylor Center as No. 11 Wayne State earned the 89-82 win.
With the loss the Mavericks fall to 11-5 overall with a mark of 8-4 in NSIC action, while the Wildcats improve to 17-2 overall and 10-2 on the circuit.
In a first half that saw 22 total turnovers and 19 personal fouls, the Mavericks trailed the Wildcats 32-20 at the break.
MSU connected on 31% (11-35) of its shots from the field, 43% (3-7) from deep and 71% (5-7) from the charity stripe. WSC shot 42% (10-24) from the field, 40% (4-10) from behind the arc and 89% (8-9) from the free throw line, including a pair of free throws with under a second remaining to give the Wildcats the 32-30 lead.
Senior
Ali Wilkinson (Blue Mounds, Wis.) paced the Mavericks, netting six first half points, in addition to four rebounds and three assists. As a unit, MSU out rebounded WSC 23-17 and forced 13 Wildcat turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play.
It was the Wildcats that opened the second half firing, outscoring the Mavericks 13-5 in the first five minutes of the contest, bringing the game to a score of 45-35 in favor of the Wildcats with 15 minutes to play. MSU cut the deficit to six, 64-58 with 4:48 remaining, which proved insurmountable as the Mavericks fell, 89-82.
Wayne State heated up in the second half, connecting on 53% (13-25) of its shots from the field, 40% (4-10) from behind the arc and was able to connect on 27 second-half free throws in the final 20 minutes. MSU shot 44% (19-43) from the field, 50% (6-12) from behind the arc but only connected on eight free throws in the second half.
For the game, MSU shot 39% (30-78) from the field, 47% (9-19) from deep and 68% (13-19) from the charity stripe. WSC connected on 47% (23-49) from the field, 40% (8-20) from behind the arc and 90% (35-39) from the free throw line.
Junior
Aubrey Davis (Bloomington, Minn.) led the way with 21 points including a 4-5 (80%) showing from behind the arc. Wilkinson finished the contest with 20 points and eight rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists.
MSU returns to action Friday as it takes to the road to do battle with Winona State, opening tip is slated for 4 p.m.
