Box Score Anchorage, Alaska --- Despite owning a huge advantage in terms shots on goal, Minnesota State found itself on the short end of the stick in dropping a 3-1 decision at Alaska-Anchorage in men's college hockey Saturday.
The host Seawolves held a 2-0 lead after the first period of action on goals from Matt Bailey and Ben Matthews.
The Mavericks outshot UAA by a 13-2 margin in the second period and a goal by senior forward
Zach Lehrke, who took a nice feed from
Jean-Paul Lafontaine before beating
Chris Kamel with a shot along the ice at 1:07, cut the deficit to one.
UAA regained its two-goal advantage in the third period on a shot from far out from Matthews that found the back of the net at 1:34 and that's how it remained as Kamel turned aside 13 shots from the Mavericks in the last period.
The Mavericks owned a 36-16 advantage in shots on goal in the game. Minnesota State was zero-for-six in power plays on the night, while the Seawolves were zero-for-two in man-advantage situations.
Now 12-9-0 overall and 10-5-0 WCHA on the year, Minnesota State continues conference action next weekend with league-leading Ferris State visiting Mankato for a two-game set. The Mavericks and the Bulldogs square-off at Verizon Wireless Center Friday (7:37 p.m.) and Saturday (7:07 p.m.).
