Box Score Moorhead, Minn. --- The #17 Minnesota State women's basketball team bounced back after falling to Northern State as it earned the 85-57 win over MSU-Moorhead Saturday at Nemzek Fieldhouse.
With the win the Mavericks improve to 10-4 overall with a mark of 7-3 on the circuit, while the Dragons drop to 9-5 overall and 5-5 in
NSIC action.
The Mavericks trailed the Dragons 7-2 two minutes into the contest, but battled back, tying the game at 10-10 with 13:35 to play in the first half, and it was all Mavericks for the rest of the half, as they took a 36-23 lead into intermission.
The Dragons attempted to slow the Maverick offense by using all of the shot clock, and were unable to do so, as they committed 14 first half turnovers. The Maverick defense gave the Dragons a fit throughout the first half, limiting them to a 5-of-24 (21%) showing from the field, including a mark of 1-of-7 (14%) from behind the arc, MSU-Moorhead was able to stay in the game by connecting on 12-of-16 free throw attempts in the opening frame.
The Mavericks connected on 36% (13-36) of their shots from the field, 25% (4-16) from deep and 75% (6-8) from the charity stripe. The junior duo of
Aubrey Davis (Bloomington, Minn.) and
Jamie Bresnahan (Edina, Minn.) led the Mavericks, each tallying seven first half points.
Minnesota State quickly extinguished any hopes of an MSU-Moorhead comeback, as it started the second half on a 13-3 run, opening a 49-26 lead with 16:30 remaining in the contest. The Mavericks opened up a 30 point lead, 65-35 with over 10 minutes remaining, and would go on to win 85-57.
The Mavericks were led by
Ali Wilkinson (Blue Mounds, Wis.) who netted her second-straight double-double and 31st of her career, she finished the game with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Bresnahan netted 13 points, Davis and freshman
Britney Scherber (Bloomington, Minn.) rounded out the Mavericks' top scorers, as they each added 11 points.
MSU connected on 46% (31-67) of its shots from the field, 26% (6-23) from deep and 74% (17-23) from the charity stripe. The Mavericks limited the Dragons to 15-of-51 (29%) of their shots from the field, 4-of-14 (29%) from deep and forced MSU-Moorhead to commit 25 turnovers.
Minnesota State returns to action as it hosts Augustana looking to improve on its program-best 23-game winning streak, opening tip is slated for 6 p.m.
