Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- Top-seeded Minnesota State collected its second straight extra-inning victory in the NCAA Central Region Tournament Friday evening at Franklin Rogers Park as it defeated fourth-seeded Missouri Western, 4-1, in ten innings behind a complete-game from senior Harvey Martin.
The Mavericks stranded a runner at second in the top of the first inning and another at third in the top of the second before MWSU tallied the game’s first run in the bottom of the second when junior
David Chew ripped a solo homerun over the right field fence off MSU senior righthander
Harvey Martin.
Minnesota State responded in the top of the fourth when senior outfielder
Scott Lindner spanked a single through the right side off Griffon junior
Jerad Hawkins that plated sophomore third baseman
Connor McCallum - who reached on a leadoff single before advancing to second on a walk - tying the game at 1-1.
From then on, neither pitcher allowed a runner to reach third base until the bottom of the eighth when the Griffons tallied back-to-back one-out singles putting runners at the corners. Senior
Grant Fink attempted to lay down a safety squeeze, but Martin fielded the bunt and threw out the runner at the plate to preserve the tie.
In the top of the 10th, a two-out single by McCallum followed by a double down the left field line from sophomore catcher
Nolan Johnson signaled the end of Hawkins’ night. The Griffons brought on senior
Logan Hollingsworth to face junior firstbaseman
Stetson Olson who took the second pitch he saw and spanked it into left-center field scoring both runners. Olson would score two batters later from third when MWSU attempted to throw out senior
Cory Glieden – who was stealing second base - to put the Mavericks up 4-1 as Martin retired the Griffons in order in the bottom of the tenth.
Martin improved to 8-0 while fanning seven and allowing seven hits, two walks and an earned run in ten innings of work. Hawkins dropped to 6-2 after striking out eight and surrendering nine hits, three earned runs and a pair of walks in nine and two-thirds innings pitched.
At the plate, McCallum was three-for-five with a double and two runs scored, while Olson ended the day one-of-five with two RBI and a run scored. Chew was two-for-four with a home run for Missouri Western.
Now 37-8 overall, the Mavericks stand 2-0 in the NCAA Central Region Tournament and will play either St. Cloud State or Southern Arkansas tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., back at Franklin Rogers with a berth in the region championship game on the line.
