Olson's Performance Lifts MSU to 10-2 Win in Rain-Altered Home Opener

4/6/2013 6:57:00 PM

Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- Both teams waited three hours to get underway, but it was No. 14 Minnesota State who proved victorious over Augustana, 10-2, in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Saturday afternoon at the MSU Baseball Complex.

Due to the rain, the two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. before concluding the four-game series with a single contest Monday at a time to be determined.

Augustana junior Jake Petersen got the Vikings on the board with a solo homerun to left field in the top of fourth inning, but the Mavericks would quickly provide an answer. Sophomore third baseman Connor McCallum extended his hitting streak to seven games with a lead-off round-tripper to left-center field before junior first baseman Stetson Olson plated sophomore catcher Nolan Johnson and sophomore outfielder Taylor Branstad with a single through the right side to give MSU a 3-1 advantage.

The Mavericks poured it on with five additional runs in the fifth inning, keyed by two Augustana errors and a three-run homerun to left-center field from Olson, to provide themselves with a seven-run cushion. Peterson clubbed his second four-bagger of the day in the top of the sixth, but MSU tallied two more on a two-run double from Johnson to complete the 10-2 final.

Senior righthander Harvey Martin tossed his second complete game of the year to improve to 4-0 overall. Martin scattered five hits and fanned 11 Vikings hitters without surrendering a walk in the contest. Olson finished two-of-three with five RBI and a homerun, while Johnson ended the day a perfect four-for-four with a pair of runs, three RBI and a double.

The Mavericks (19-7, 8-3 NSIC) and Vikings continue the four-game series tomorrow afternoon with the doubleheader scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. at the MSU Baseball Complex.
