No. 11 Mavericks Claim Four in a Row From Golden Eagles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Minneapolis, Minn. --- Eleventh-ranked Minnesota State allowed only two runs in 29 innings as it completed a four-game sweep of Minnesota, Crookston in non-conference play Sunday night and Monday afternoon at the Metrodome.
 
The Mavericks defeated the Golden Eagles 9-0 and 10-0 yesterday evening before capturing a pair of wins this afternoon by margins of 3-0 and 12-2. MSU has now won a season-high five contests in a row.
 
In the game one Sunday night, the Purple and Gold pushed a run across in the bottom of the first inning and added a pair of three-run innings in the third and fourth before notching two more in the fifth to complete the 9-0 final. Junior infielder Stetson Olson finished two-of-three with three RBIs including a two-run blast to right field, while senior righthander Harvey Martin fanned seven and allowed one hit in five shutout innings to earn the win and improve to 2-0.
 
Junior righthander Jason Hoppe (4-0) would not be out done in the second contest as he went seven scoreless innings while striking out nine UMC hitters and scattering two hits to pick up his fourth victory of the season. Olson drove in four more runs in game two, including two on a single up the middle in the bottom of the third and a pair on a two-run homerun to right field in the eighth inning. Sophomore infielder Connor McCallum went four-for-five in the ball game with a two runs scored and two RBIs.
 
The Mavericks opened today’s double-dip with a 3-0 victory in the first game keyed by another outstanding pitching performance from a junior righthander. Tyler Ockuly tossed six innings of three-hit, scoreless baseball while recording 11 strikeouts to move to 2-2 overall. MSU produced two unearned runs in the bottom of fifth and added another in the sixth before senior righthander Mahlon Zimmerman locked down his fifth save of the year in the top of the seventh.
 
Minnesota State brought out the bats again in game two as it scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings to cruise to a 12-2 win. Junior catcher Mike Andries chipped in a two-run single in the second inning and a three-run double in the third as he ended the contest two-of-three with two runs scored and six RBIs. Olson tallied another multi-hit game going two-of-three with a pair of runs scored and an inside-the-park homerun. Junior righthander T.J. Larson registered six strikeouts and did not allow a run in three innings of work to move to 2-0 on the season.
 
All in all, Olson was 7-for-13 in the four-game set with two stolen bases, three homeruns, five runs scored and eight RBIs, while McCallum went 6-for-12 with four runs scored and a pair of RBIs.
 
Now 15-4 overall, the Mavericks will begin conference play Friday against Northern State with a home doubleheader scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
