Bowling Green, Ohio --- Minnesota State found itself behind early in Saturday's Western Collegiate Hockey Association game at Bowling Green, but after facing a 2-0 first-period deficit, continued to battle and eventually claimed the win in overtime.
The host Falcons, who had downed the Mavericks in overtime Friday, converted on a power play chance at 13:21 of the opening frame with Mike Sullivan's shot from the point finding the back of the net. Mark Cooper's one-timer from at 16:03 made it a two-goal BGSU lead and that's how the scored remained until the 16:38 mark of the second period when Minnesota State junior forward Matt Leitner tallied on a rebound shot with the Mavericks on the power play. The goal is the first of the year for Leitner.
Junior Jean-Paul Lafontaine's deflection of Zach Palmquist's shot from the point at 8:40 of the third period knotted it up and sent the game into overtime.
Junior forward Chase Grant forced a turnover in the defensive zone in the extra session and the Oklahoma City native sent a pass to Bryce Gervais and the sophomore forward beat BGSU netminder Tomas Sholl with a shot on the stickside to end the game at 1:30. The goal is the fourth of the season for Gervais and his fourth career game-winning tally.
The Mavericks used two netminders in the game with sophomore Stephon Williams stopping 11 of 13 shots and freshman Cole Huggins credited with 21 saves on 21 shots. BGSU outshot the Mavericks by a 34-33 margin in the game.
Minnesota State converted on two-of-seven power play chances, while Bowling Green was successful on one-of-six opportunities with the man advantage.
The Mavericks upped their record to 5-7-0 overall with the win and are now 3-3-0 WCHA. Bowling Green falls to 6-5-3 overall, 4-3-1 WCHA.
MSU continues league play next Friday and Saturday with Alaska Anchorage visiting Verizon Wireless Center in downtown Mankato.
