Mavericks Grind It Out to Improve to 2-1 with win over Metro State

Box Score Denver, Colo. --- No. 24 Minnesota State earns its second win of the season with a 75-63 win over Metro State, behind senior Ali Wilkinson's (Blue Mounds, Wis.) 27th career double-double.

The Mavericks jumped out to an early 12-1 lead in the first four minutes of the contest, but Metro State would make things interesting, as it went on a 16-9 run, cutting the Maverick lead to 21-17 with eight minutes remaining in the opening stanza.

MSU would take a 34-30 lead into intermission, as it connected 13-of-30 (43%) of its shots from the field, but went 0-of-5 from behind the arc. The Mavericks did force 10 Roadrunner turnovers, recording eight steals in the first 20 minutes. Metro State was able to capitalize on the 12 MSU fouls as it tallied 13 of its 30 first half points from the charity stripe.

The Mavericks were led in the first half by the senior tandem of Wilkinson and Karlee Gengenbacher (Quincy, Ill.), who tallied 15 points and 12 points respectively.

MSU would open the second half on a 13-7 run, extending its lead to 49-37 lead with 12:51 remaining. The Roadrunners, however, would go on a 9-0 run cutting the Maverick lead to seven points, 68-61 with 1:42 to play. MSU would grind it out, finishing the game on a 5-2 run, earning the 75-63 win.

Wilkinson posted her 27th career double-double and second of the season as she finished the game with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Gengenbacher would post her second-career 20 point game, as she finished with 20 points, three rebounds and three steals.

As a unit the Mavericks would connect on 27-of-60 (45%) of their shots from the field, 1-of-10 (10%) from behind the arc and 20-of-29 (69%) from the charity stripe.

MSU did commit 27 personal fouls, allowing Metro State to connect on 24-of-33 (73%) of its shots from the charity stripe. The Roadrunners would turn the ball over 20 times, with the Mavericks recording 14 steals.

The Mavericks will return to action tomorrow as they do battle with the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, tip-off is slated  for 6 p.m. CT.
