Chase Grant propelled the 14-rated Mavericks to a 4-3 overtime win in a men’s hockey nonconference game played in Mankato Friday night.
Providence got on the board first after
Tom Parisi took a pass from
Ross Mauermann and wristed a shot that went through a maze of defenders to beat MSU freshman goaltender
Stephon Williams high on the glove side at 2:41 of the opening period. MSU responded with a power play goal from senior forward
Eriah Hayes, who took a centering pass from
Matt Leitner and powered the puck past Providence netminder
Russ Stein at 5:37 in scoring his team-high 11th goal of the year. MSU added another power play goal to make it 2-1 when junior defensman
Josh Nelson beat Stein at 7:15. Providence knotted the score at 2-2 on a goal scored by P
aul De Jersey, who slipped the puck past Williams at 9:28.
Providence made it a 3-2 game in the second period on a goal scored by
Derek Army, who collected a rebound off a shot by
Kyle Murphy and put the puck into the nat 1:11. MSU answered right back with a shorthanded goal by sophomore defenseman
Brett Stern, who skated into the offensive zone with the puck and backhanded a shot past Stein at 17:37.
The Mavericks and Friars skated to a scoreless third period and the Mavericks finished the game and secured the win in overtime at 3:26 when a shot by
Johnny McInnis from the side of the net was deflected into the goal by sophomore forward
Chase Grant. The goal is Grant's sixth of the year.
Minnesota State, now 13-6-2 overall on the season, outshot Providence 35-32 on the night. The Mavericks, who are 10-1-0 in their last 11 games, were two-for-four on power play chances, while Providence was zero-for-six with the man advantage. The game was played in front of 3,316 fans at Verizon Wireless Center.
MSU and Providence close out the two-game series Saturday night with a 7:07 p.m. face-off scheduled.
