Mavericks Upended by Minnesota Saturday

1/19/2013 6:07:00 PM

Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women’s hockey team was swept at home for the first time this season as it was defeated by No. 1 Minnesota, 6-0, in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest Saturday afternoon at All Seasons Arena.

Back-to-back penalties proved dubious for the Mavericks in the first period when Milaca McMillen scored a power-play goal at 10:20 on a shot that snuck by MSU junior Danielle Butters - who was screened on the play - to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Gophers tallied three additional markers in the second period as two goals from Hannah Brandt at 5:04 and 13:39, respectively, bookended a Megan Bozek goal at the 7:48 mark to provide Minnesota with a four-goal cushion after two periods of play.

Bozek would garner her second goal of the match seven minutes into the third period on a slap shot from the point before Rachel Bona completed the scoring for Minnesota on a goal that slipped across the goal line at 15:45 of the final frame.

Minnesota State was outshot by a 47-26 margin in the game and was unable to convert on its two power-play opportunities. The Golden Gophers ended one-of-five on the man advantage. Butters finished with a game-high 34 saves and UM goaltender Noora Raty stopped all 26 Maverick shots she face to pick up the win.

Minnesota State falls to 9-14-3 overall, 5-13-3-1 in the WCHA and will enjoy a week off before taking on North Dakota Feb. 1-2 at All Seasons Arena.
