Mavericks Fall to Badgers in Overtime For Second Straight Night

Box Score        Mankato, Minn. ---  11th rated Minnesota State and Wisconsin played overtime hockey for the second straight night with Saturday's game ending much like it did Friday, with the visiting Badgers coming away with a victory.

Following a scoreless opening period, Wisconsin struck first in the second period when forward Jefferson Dahl went in on a partial breakaway and slid the puck past MSU freshman goaltender Stephon Williams at 16:55.

MSU tied the game in the third period on a goal scored by sophomore forward Matt Leitner, who redirected a shot by senior defenseman Evan Mosey from the point past Wisconsin goaltender Joel Rumpel  at 12:27. The goal, Leitner’s ninth on the year, sent the game into overtime.

Wisconsin got the game-winning goal in overtime for the second consecutive night from defenseman John Ramage, who flipped the puck past Williams at 04:54.

Minnesota State, now 14-8-2 overall and 8-8-0 in WCHA games on the season, outshot Wisconsin 36-26.The Mavericks were zero-for-nine on the power play, while Wisconsin was zero-for-three in power play chances. The game was played in front of 3,826 fans at Verizon Wireless Center.

Minnesota State continues WCHA action next Friday with a pair of road games at Alaska Anchorage next Friday and Saturday.

Minnesota State head coach Mike Hastings commented after the game.
