MSU hosts UMC Wednesday before home-and-home DH against SMSU

Mavericks Set For Regular Season Home Finale

MANKATO, Minn. - Minnesota State plays its final regular season home games this week as the No. 6 Mavericks host Minnesota, Crookston Wednesday before a home-and-home series against Southwest Minnesota State.  Wednesday's doubleheader starts at noon while the weekend double dips are slated for 1:30 p.m., with Saturday's at the MSU Baseball Complex.

A Look at the Golden Eagles: The Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagles are 10-28 overall, 4-20 in the NSIC, have lost 13 of their last 14 games heading into Wednesday's doubleheader against Minnesota State.  Coached by Chris Vito, the Golden Eagles are led by Josh Brehmer who owns a .362 batting average with a team-high 18 RBI in 37 games played.  Matt Korte is second on the team with a .357 batting average as he has collected 20 hits in 56 at-bats.  Third on the team with 124 at-bats, Charlie Pelzer owns a .315 batting average and has driven in 12 runs for the Golden Eagles.  UMC is led on the mound by Nick Kelzer who owns a 3-3 record in eight starts while posting a 5.44 ERA.  Kelzer also leads the team with 25 strikeouts and has given up 29 earned runs on 58 hits in 48.0 innings of work.  As a team, UMC has a 7.22 ERA and is allowing an opponents batting average of .322.

A Look at the Mustangs: The Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs, owners of a 21-16 overall record (11-11 NSIC), have lost three of their last four games and will host Minnesota Duluth in a doubleheader on Wednesday before their home-and-home series with MSU.  Coached by Paul Blaanchard, the Mustangs are led at the plate by Adam Thygesen who has recorded a team-best 36 hits, 15 doubles and a .340 batting average in 34 games.  Thygesen has added two home runs and is second on the team with 21 RBI while he is slugging a team-high .538 with a .409 on-base percentage.  Leading the team with three home runs and 27 RBI is Brian Ness who owns a .311 batting average in 35 games played.  The Mustangs pitching staff is led by Alex Alvarez who is 3-3 with a 3.19 ERA in 10 appearances (five starts).  Jeremy Schmidt paces the Mustangs with 30 strikeouts while owning a 1-1 record with a 3.99 ERA in seven appearances.

Last Week's Action: Minnesota State went 5-1 last week after splitting with Augustana and taking a four-game series at home against Bemidji State.  Senior Matt Kuchenbecker led the way offensively for MSU going 13-for-22 (.591) with a home run, four doubles, six runs scored and eight driven in.  Kuchenbecker struck while the iron was hot slugging .909 with a .625 on-base percentage.  Senior Pat Dockendorf, despite a slow start at the plate to begin the week, finished strong collecting eight hits in the Mavericks final three games including a ninth-inning walk-off home run in game two Monday against the Beavers.  Dockendorf finished the week with a .400 batting average, two home runs, two doubles and seven RBI.  Senior Ben Kincaid hit .500 in four games at the plate while also earning a 1-1 record on the mound while posting a 1.38 earned run average.  Kincaid led MSU with 11 strikeouts while allowing just two earned runs in 13.0 innings of work.  Posting a 2-0 record on the bump while also recording a save was junior Nick Sutherland who posted a 1.12 ERA after allowing just one run on seven hits in eight innings pitched.  Also earning wins on the mound for MSU were senior Harvey Martin and sophomore Bryce Bellin.

MSU Baseball Quick Hits: The Mavericks have won 12 of their last 14 games...Kuchenbecker leads MSU with 16 multiple hit games...Dockendorf leads the team with 12 multiple RBI games...Kuchenbecker's six-game hitting streak is currently the longest on the team...Skjefte has the longest hitting streak this season at 14 games...Skjefte is on a 13-game on-base streak while he also has the longest one of all Mavericks this season at 21 games...MSU is 6-1 in one-run games and 4-2 in two-run games.
