Box Score 2 MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State took both games Sunday from the visiting Bemidji State Beavers as the Mavericks won game one 4-2 before earning a 15-3 victory in game two at the MSU Baseball Complex.
After trading runs through the first two innings, Minnesota State took a 2-1 lead in the third as senior
Matt Odegaard laid down a bunt which brought in senior
Pat Dockendorf who had singled earlier in the inning.
Senior
Jeremy Sudbeck would give the Mavericks a 4-1 lead after five innings as his two-run home run brought in Odegaard who had earlier singled.
Bemidji State would add one run in the seventh inning but it wouldn’t be enough as junior
Nick Sutherland earned his seventh save of the season after pitching the final inning of game one.
Senior
Harvey Martin earned his eighth win of the season after allowing one run on three hits while striking out three batters in six innings of work.
Sudbeck led MSU at the plate in game one going 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. His fifth-inning home run was his second of the season.
The first inning of game two saw seven runs as Bemidji State scored one before MSU responded back with six of its own to take a 6-1 lead. The Mavericks received run-producing hits from Dockendorf, junior
Mike Eckhart and freshman
Connor McCallum.
Dockendorf gave Minnesota State the lead with a three-run blast, his sixth of the season, before a two-run triple by Eckhart and an RBI single by McCallum.
The Mavericks continued to pour it on the following inning scoring four runs highlighted by Sudbeck’s three-run home run, his third of the season, as Minnesota State extended its lead to 10-1.
MSU took a 10-run lead in the bottom half of the third inning as senior
Ben Kincaid hit an RBI double before freshman
Nolan Johnson connected on an RBI single which gave the Mavericks a 12-2 advantage.
A wild pitch in the fourth inning by MSU starting pitcher sophomore
Bryce Bellin would score BSU’s third run of the game but the Mavericks would earn the run back in the bottom half of the inning on Dockendorf’s RBI single.
The 10-run-rule would come into effect in game two as the Mavericks added their final two runs in the sixth inning to take a 15-3 lead where the score would remain for the final inning.
Bellin earned his seventh win on the hill after allowing three runs on seven hits in second complete game of the season.
Dockendorf led the Mavericks at the dish going 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored while senior
Matt Kuchenbecker, Kincaid, Johnson and Eckhart each added two hits.
Sudbeck finished the afternoon with five RBI after adding three more in game two as the Mavericks improved to 27-7 overall and 15-3 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The two losses dropped the Beavers to 17-19 overall and 10-12 in league action.
Minnesota State returns to the diamond tomorrow to complete its four-game series against the Beavers. First pitch of Monday’s doubleheader is slated for noon at the MSU Baseball Complex.
