Mankato, Minn.-- Ninth-ranked Minnesota State (36-7, 16-2 NSIC) shut out Concordia ( 22-17, 7-9 NSIC) in a doubleheader Wednesday at the Diamond at Gage Towers. The Mavericks took game one, 6-0, then used a six-inning performance to capture the 8-0 win. With the MSU’s sweep over the Golden Bears and the Augustana sweep over Winona State on Wednesday, the Mavericks move into first place in the NSIC standings.
In game one, each team was even in the hits column at four each as MSU triumphed to a 6-0 win. Senior pitcher Kendra Huettl went seven innings and struck out nine on the day, en route to her 16th win of the season.
The Mavericks first jumped on the board in the second inning when senior outfielder Chelsea Erickson scored as freshman Brittani Robinson singled to center. Robinson advanced to second on the throw at the plate and scored after she switched places with junior shortstop Abby Sonner after a base knock. Sonner’s RBI single put the Mavericks up 2-0 after two innings.
Sonner scored an unearned run in the sixth inning when she reached the base paths on an error, stole second on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by the shortstop.
Minnesota State junior pitcher Courtney McKelvogue started for the Mavericks in the nightcap as she pitched complete game one-hitter for her 16th win of the season.
The Mavericks scored one run in the first inning. Morris singled on a bunt before she landed on third base when freshman Lindsay Erickson singled. Morris scored when Chelsea Erickson singled up the middle.
Morris kept things rolling in the third when she hit her first home run of season to give MSU a 2-0 early cushion.
The Mavericks scored five runs in the fourth inning off of five hits and a Golden Bear error. Wood reached on a throwing error before Robinson singled through the left side of the infield. Both runner’s moved up a base from a wild pitch and scored after Sonner singled to center field. Sophomore Eryn Edgerton entered the game and singled to center to put runners at first and third. Senior infielder Amanda Umhoefer laid a bunt down for a squeeze attempt but Concordia made the play at the plate to get Sonner out
Senior outfielder Melanie Upchurch then singled to center that scored Edgerton. Morris doubled, scoring Umhoefer and Upchurch to make the score 7-0 MSU after four innings.
The Mavericks ended the game on the mercy rule when Upchurch got on by a fielder’s choice, got to second on a passed ball and scored on a Morris single.
The Mavericks outhit the Golden Bears 12-1 in the game. Morris finished 4-for-4 at the plate in the second game and earned four RBI.
Ninth-ranked Minnesota State (36-7, 16-2) plays its senior day on Saturday against Southwest Minnesota State in a NSIC doubleheader at 1 p.m., in Mankato.
