MSU posts a 16-1 record in last 17 games

Mavericks Finish Florida Trip with Two 5-0 Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Fla.-- Minnesota State (17-4) capped off its Rebel Spring Games trip with a pair of 5-0 victories against Adelphi University and California (Pa.) in Kissimmee, Fla., Friday. The Mavericks finish with a 13-1 record in Florida and extend their winning streak to eight games.
 
In game one of the final day of their trip, the Mavericks shut out Adelphi 5-0 and took advantage of the two Adelphi errors.
 
MSU used a three-run third inning after Chelsea Erickson hit a single and then stole second before Sophomore Kelly Wood reached on an error. Erickson then stole third and Wood took second on the steal. Freshman infielder Brittani Robinson had a bunt single and advanced to second that scored Erickson and moved Wood to third. Junior infielder Abby Sonner hit a sac fly, scoring Wood and moving Robinson to third. Freshman designated player Chelsea Riordan singled, bringing Robinson in for the third Maverick run of the inning.
 
In the fifth, junior outfielder Lauryn Morris hit a based loaded single that brought in the fourth Minnesota State run before Chelsea Erickson delivered an RBI walk to give MSU the 5-0 victory.
 
The Mavericks were outhit 6-5 but Minnesota State junior pitcher Courtney McKelvogue found a way to her sixth win of the season. McKelvogue struck out eight in her 26 batters faced.
 
In the nightcap, MSU scored two runs in the second inning that was started when Robinson was hit by a pitch and took second on a ground ball. The Mavericks strung together three hits in a row by Riordan, junior Liz Doppenberg and freshman outfielder Christina Redd that gave MSU a pair of runs.
 
Minnesota State capitalized on a three-error innings to score three runs in the fourth without producing a hit. Riordan, Red and Doppenberg scored the three MSU runs that capped off the 5-0 win.
 
Maverick senior pitcher Kendra Huettl gave a five-inning performance from the circle without giving up a hit. McKelvogue pitched the final two innings giving up just one hit in the seventh inning. Huettl struck out six in the game and McKelvogue tallied one strike out.
 
Minnesota State (17-4) will face Minot State in the Winona State University Dome Tournament on Saturday March 17 at 11 a.m., in Rochester, Minn. The Mavericks are also scheduled to play St. Cloud State and Winona State in the tournament.
