Auburndale, Fla. --- In an extra-inning battle between two nationally-ranked teams, #5 Grand Valley State emerged victorious with the Lakers claiming an 8-7 win over 16th-rated Minnesota State Wednesday in Florida.
MSU owned a 4-0 lead through three and half innings, but Grand Valley State would not go away, eventually tying the game at 5-5 with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Both teams scored a run in the 11th inning, before the Lakers tallied the game-winning run in the bottom of the 12th.
The Mavericks got a three-for-five performance, along with a double and a run batted in from sophmore catcher Nolan Johnson and senior first baseman Jeremy Sudbeck was three-for-five with a double and two RBI.
Sophomore Bryce Bellin, the first of MSU's five pitchers in the game, gave up seven hits and three earned runs in six innings. Sophomore Jordan Krause came on in the bottom of the 12th to take the loss and he is 0-1 on the year.
Now 8-3 on the year, Minnesota State closes out its spring break trip to Florida with a nine-inning nonconference game tomorrow in Winterhaven, Fla., with a 2:30 p.m. start time scheduled with Saginaw Valley State.
