What Lies Ahead: Thirteenth-ranked Minnesota State continues its road portion of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule as it heads to Wayne State Wednesday for a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
MSU then returns to Mankato to open its home schedule as it hosts MSU Moorhead on Saturday and Minnesota, Crookston on Sunday. Both doubleheaders are slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
What just happened: Minnesota State went 5-1 last week and 3-1 in NSIC action. The Mavericks started out the week with a nonconference sweep over Concordia, winning 10-5 and 2-0 in the Vadnais Heights Dome.
The Mavericks opened their NSIC schedule on the road with a split with UMD last Saturday, dropping the first game 5-4 in seven innings before it shut out the Bulldogs 6-0. MSU then swept Bemidji State 12-0 and 8-0 on Sunday as MSU pitcher Courtney McKelvogue threw a five inning no-hitter in game one.
MSU hit to a .335 batting average last week and hammered nine doubles, two triples and eight home runs. Sophomore Lindsay Erickson junior Abby Sonner, sophomore Kelly Wood and senior Chelsea Erickson all hit over .400 during the six games.
Head Coach Lori Meyer: One of the most respected coaches in all of NCAA Division II softball, Lori Meyer is in her 28th year as the head coach of the Minnesota State softball team. Meyer owns a career record of 901-571-3 (.611) in 1,475 games. A seven-time NCC Coach of the Year, Meyer has guided the Mavericks to three North Central Conference titles (1987, 1989 and 2007), and guided the ‘87 Mavericks to a third-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Tournament and has made nine trips to the NCAA postseason and two trips to the NCAA Championships (1987, 2011).
Minnesota State History: The 2012 season marks the 38th for Maverick softball. MSU owns an all-time record of 1,026-669-7 (.604) in 1,702 games, and have four North Central Conference titles (1984, 1987, 1989, 2007) and ten appearances in the NCAA Division II National Tournament (1984, 1987, 1989, 1995, 1997, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011) to its credit.
