Mavericks Split in NSIC Opener

, Minn.— No. 13 Minnesota State (21-6, 1-1 NSIC) opened its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule with a split in Duluth against Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon. The first game lasted nine innings as MSU suffered a 5-4 loss before it took a 6-0 shutout win in the second game.

In the opening game, the Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump ahead of MSU right away. The Mavericks answered with a solo shot by sophomore third baseman Kelly Wood in the top of the second.

MSU tied the game at two in the top of the seventh when senior first baseman Chelsea Erickson went deep for the fourth time this year.

Minnesota State earned its first lead of the game in the top of the ninth inning when MSU junior infielder Abby Sonner hit a two-run home run to put the Mavericks up 4-2.

UMD won the game in the bottom of the ninth as the Bulldog offense collected four hits to give them three runs, earning the 5-4 win. MSU was outhit 8-7 in the contest as Sonner was 3-of-4 at the plate for the Mavericks.

MSU senior pitcher Kendra Huettl went eight innings, striking out eight and giving up five hits. Maverick junior pitcher Courtney McKelvogue pitched to the final six batters of the game.

In game two, Minnesota State was the one to jump out 2-0 after the first inning. MSU hammered four singles in a row by sophomore third baseman Lindsay Erickson, Chelsea Erickson, Wood and freshman infielder Brittani Robinson.

Sonner had an RBI single to bring in Robinson in the fourth inning to put the Mavericks up 3-0.

Robinson used a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to give the MSU the 6-0 victory. Chelsea Erickson hit a single and Wood found the base paths from a walk before Robinson’s fifth home run of the season.

MSU’s McKelvogue pitched the complete game shut out, tallying four strikeouts.

Minnesota State (21-6) continues action Sunday as it heads to face Bemidji State for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
