Mavericks Shut Out Warriors but Yield to Huskies

WINONA, Minn.—
No.16 Minnesota State (18-5) split its two games on Saturday, losing 5-3 in nine innings to St. Cloud State before beating No.7 Winona State 3-0. Senior Melanie Upchurch led the offensive attack with four hits and three runs on the day as senior Kendra Huettl pitched a complete game shutout over the Warriors.
 
In the first game the Huskies used a home run in the second inning, followed by a one-run third inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead. MSU gained a run back in the fourth when sophomore catcher Kelly Wood walked and scored when senior first baseman Chelsea Erickson doubled to left center field, forcing a 2-1 score after four innings.
 
After a scoreless fifth and sixth inning, SCSU moved to a two-run lead in the top of the seventh after it added a run. Minnesota State didn’t lay down in the seventh as freshman outfielder Christina Redd led off with a single, followed by double by Upchurch to put both runners in scoring position. Junior outfielder Lauryn Morris hit an RBI single, moving to second base on a throw that put Mavericks at second and third again with no outs. MSU’s Wood hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Upchurch, knotting the game 3-3. MSU was unable to bring in the winning run in the seventh as it left the bases loaded.
 
The Huskies scored two runs in the in the ninth inning to take the 5-3 win. Junior pitcher Courtney McKelvogue went six innings, striking out two and giving up nine hits. Senior pitcher Kendra Huettl pitched two and a third innings as she gave up two runs on five hits. Sophomore hurler Kristen Fah recorded the final two outs of the game from the circle.
 
Minnesota State used three one-run innings for its three runs of the game against Winona State. In the first inning, Upchurch doubled and scored on a Morris RBI single. Upchurch crossed the plate again in the third inning when she singled, stole second base and then crossed home when WSU made a throwing error from a ground ball off the bat of Morris.
 
MSU’s Redd tallied the third run after she hit a lead off single in the fifth inning. Redd stole second base, was bunted over to third and scored after a wild pitch.
 
Minnesota State’s Huettl pitched a complete game shutout, giving up just four hits and striking out five.
 
The Mavericks return to action for a nonconference doubleheader Wednesday against Concordia at 11 a.m., in the Vadnais Sports Dome in Vadnais Heights, Minn.
