Final Road Trip of Regular Season Awaits Mavericks

MANKATO, Minn.   —   Minnesota State encounters its final regular-season road trip of the season this weekend when it faces St. Cloud State Friday at 6 p.m., and Concordia Saturday at 4 p.m.

Week in Review: Minnesota State (14-7, 10-7 NSIC) went 1-1 last weekend earning a 98-95 overtime victory over No. 25 Augustana on Friday before falling to conference-leading No. 4 Wayne State, 83-45 Saturday.  Six Mavericks reached double figures against the Vikings as senior guard Jennie Noreen paced the Mavericks with 20 points including a 3-of-6 performance from downtown while fellow senior Laura Weber, freshman Jamie Bresnahan and sophomore Alli Hoefer each added 15 points.  Also scoring double digits for MSU were freshman guard Aubrey Davis who added 13 points while junior guard Sarah Wiens contributed ten.  Two Mavericks also recorded double-doubles on the night as Weber added 11 rebounds en route to her fourth double-double of the season while Bresnahan notched her first career double-double pulling down 11 rebounds.  MSU saw two players reach double figures the following night against the Wildcats as Weber and Davis each added 10 points.  Weber was one of the three Mavericks to average double-digit scoring over the weekend posting 12.5 points while adding 7.0 rebounds per game.  Joining Weber were Noreen with 12.0 points and 4.5 rebounds and Davis who added 11.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest.  Setting up the Maverick scorers were Noreen and Davis who each added 3.5 assists per game.

Upcoming Opponents: Friday, Minnesota State travels to St. Cloud, Minn., to face the Huskies.  Sitting 11-10 overall, 8-9 in the NSIC, the Huskies have won their last two games with the latest coming against Upper Iowa, 97-63.  St. Cloud State owns a 52-36 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools including wins in three of the last five meetings.  However, MSU defeated St. Cloud, 60-46, earlier this season behind a pair of 14-point efforts from Weber and Davis.  Saturday, the Mavericks face Concordia who is 9-14 overall and 6-11 in the NSIC.  The Golden Bears have won one of their last four games and will play Southwest Minnesota State before Saturday’s contest with MSU.  Concordia was last in action Feb. 4 when it fell, 60-52 against Winona State.  The Mavericks are 9-13 all-time against the Golden Bears including losses in the last five meetings.  The last time MSU came out on top against CU was in 2010 when the Mavericks escaped with a 79-76 victory.  When the two teams met earlier this season, MSU was unable to comeback from a 39-35 halftime deficit as the Golden Bears connected on 15-of-19 second-half free throws en route to the 83-67 win.  MSU was led in the loss by Noreen who finished with 18 points including an 8-of-9 performance from the free-throw line.  Also finishing with double-digit points for the Mavericks were Weber with 15 and Bresnahan with 11.

Scouting the Huskies: The Huskies, coached by Lori Fish, are led by four players averaging eight or more points as Jessica Benson leads the way with 9.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.  Second on the team with 8.7 points per game is Aaryn Booker who is connecting on 41.4 percent from the floor while adding 1.7 assists per contest.  Sam Price averages 8.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per game while connecting on 79.5 percent from the charity stripe.  Jordi Gerking is the final member of the Huskies averaging more than eight points as she has posted 8.2 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest.  The Huskies average 64.2 points per game on 36.9 percent shooting, which is second-worst in the NSIC, while allowing opponents 63.0 points on 43.0 percent shooting.

Scouting the Golden Bears: The Golden Bears, coached by Paul Fessler, are led by Carissa Wolyniec who averages 10.6 points on 42.6 percent shooting including 37.7 percent from downtown.  Leading the Golden Bears on the glass is Anika Whiting who averages 6.0 rebounds while also contributing 10.3 points per game.  Distributing the ball to the Golden Bears shooters has been Rachel Hansen who is 13th in the NSIC with 2.8 assists per game.  CU averages 65.7 points on 39.9 percent shooting while allowing opponents 65.4 points per contest on 37.2 percent shooting.
