Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Minnesota State led for the majority of the game Friday night against St. Cloud but was unable to overcome a late comeback as the Huskies defeated the Mavericks, 64-59.
The Mavericks dominated the first eight minutes of the second half as they held the Huskies to just three points as they opened a 10-point lead at 41-31.
MSU would open its largest lead of the game with 8:46 remaining taking 15-point lead, which they would soon see evaporate, as the Huskies made a late-game run.
SCSU used an 18-3 run which gave them a one-point lead at 58-57 with just 1:55 left as Amanda Wagner made a layup after a Minnesota State turnover.
Unable to convert on the offensive end, SCSU earned a three-point lead with just a minute remaining as Aaryn Booker connected on a jumper making the score, 60-57.
The Huskies extended their lead to five points after a pair of free throws by Rachael Moen before MSU was able to draw within three on a layup by sophomore guard
Alli Hoefer.
However, it was too little too late for MSU as St. Cloud State’s Nicole Anderson connected on two free throws with just two seconds remaining which sealed the 64-59 comeback victory for the Huskies.
In the first half Minnesota State led by as much as seven points at 20-13 with eight minutes remaining before St. Cloud State would cut the lead to just one at the break.
The Huskies used a 10-2 run to take a one-point lead at 23-22, while the teams then traded baskets throughout the remainder of the half as MSU went into the break with a 29-28 lead.
The Mavericks were led by senior forward
Laura Weber who earned her fifth double-double of the season with a 15-point, 12-rebound effort. Joining Weber in double digits was fellow senior
Jennie Noreen who added 14 points and eight rebounds.
MSU shot 42.6 percent from the field while connecting on just 3-of-13 (23.1 3FG%) attempts from three-point range. St. Cloud shot just 39.3 percent from the field but recorded 24 points off of MSU turnovers.
Minnesota State scored 32 of its 59 points in the paint as freshman forward
Jamie Bresnahan tallied all eight of her points in the first half. She also finished the game with 10 rebounds as the Mavericks outrebounded SCSU, 42-32.
The Huskies were led by Jessica Benson and Moen who each added 17 points as they improved to 12-10 overall and 9-9 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Minnesota State (14-8, 10-8 NSIC) plays its final road game of the regular season tomorrow in St. Paul, Minn., as the Mavericks are scheduled for a 4 p.m., tip against Concordia-St. Paul.
