Box Score Rohnert Park, Calif. --- The Minnesota State men's basketball team opened the 2012 Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic with a 75-68 victory over the host Sonoma State Seawolves late Friday evening.
The Mavericks – who got points from nine of the ten players who played – saw four players reach double-figures in the win.
Senior guard
Jarvis Williams registered his first double-double as a Maverick and the second by an MSU player this year, with a 14-point, 10-rebound effort.
Sophomore guard
Zach Monaghan added 11 points while junior forward
Connor O'Brien and sophomore forward
Assem Marei each scored ten.
"I was excited with how we weathered Sonoma State's storm to start the first half," said associate head coach
Mike Schott. "I thought our bench was huge tonight for us. It's a nice win, but we have to forget about it quick because we have another tough game tomorrow night."
Sonoma State opened the game hot as it connected its first four three-point attempts – along with a traditional three-point play – to open an 18-8 lead with 14:53 left in the first half, prompting a Minnesota State timeout.
Minnesota State responded with a 7-0 run to trim the deficit to 18-15 after a three point field goal by sophomore forward
Zach Romashko. Both team' then traded baskets until Romashko drilled he second three to knot the game at 26 with 8:39 left in the half.
From that point on, both teams traded baskets going into the break as MSU took a 41-40 lead into the break. Romashko led all Mavericks in scoring in the first half with eight points while sophomore
Lucas Brown added seven points. The Mavericks bench outscored Sonoma State's, 22-8 and MSU used nine offensive rebounds and converted them into 12 points.
The second half began like the first half ended, with both teams trading baskets before MSU opened a 57-51 lead thanks to back-to-back baskets by Marei. From that point on, Minnesota State controlled the play, as the closest SSU would come is 61-58 with 4:43 remaining.
The Mavericks shot 48.3 percent from the floor the victory and owned a 38-26 advantage on the glass, including a 14-8 edge on the offensive end, oustscoring the Seawolves 17-9 in second chance points. Minnesota State saw its bench score 27 points and pounded 42 points in the paint.
Monaghan passed out a team-high six assists in the win, while O'Brien added eight rebounds and Marei grabbed seven.
Minnesota State (2-0) wraps up action in the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic Saturday evening as it plays San Francisco State at 5:30, PST.
