Box Score Aberdeen, S.D. – Minnesota State began its 2012-13 campaign on a positive note as they downed Black Hills State University, 91-60, to improve to 1-0 on the season.
The Mavericks led 52-30 after the first stanza as they shot 49% from the floor, 43% from behind the arc and dished out 17 assists.
Minnesota State was led in the first half by junior guard
Karlee Gengenbacher, who scored 11 points in the half. Sophomore guard Ashley Olson added nine points, while shooting 2-of-6 from behind the arc (.333) and 1-of-1 from the charity stripe.
The Mavericks carried their momentum to the second half as they started the half on a 21-11 run to extend their lead to 73-41 with just under 15 minutes remaining in regulation. Sophomore
Aubrey Davis led the charge offensively for the Mavericks in the second half, she finished with 17 points.
The Mavericks were led by Davis who finished with 17 points, she was one of three Mavericks to record double-digit points. Gengenbacher finished with 13 points and junior forward
Ali Wilkinson chipped in 11 points in the winning effort.
Minnesota State shot 32-of-68 (47%) from the floor, converted on 13-of-33 (39%) shots from behind the arc, collectively they recorded 42 rebounds, 15 steals and three blocks while forcing the Yellow Jackets to commit 27 turnovers.
The Mavericks will return to action tomorrow, as they face-off against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in the final day of the Northern State Tournament, tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
