Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State junior kicker Sam Brockhsus booted a 20-yard field goal in the second overtime to propel the tenth-ranked Mavericks to a 34-31 double-overtime victory over Southwest Minnesota State in front of 3,162 fans in Blakeslee Stadium.
The game marked the first overtime game for Minnesota State since it fell to Hillsdale, 27-24 in the NCAA tournament on Nov. 14, 2009.
Trailing 24-10 with seven minutes and 36 seconds left in the game Minnesota State junior quarterback Jon Wolf engineered two scoring drives to seal the win.
On the first drive, Wolf sophomore tight end Jeff Burns for a 15-yard gain and on then followed it up with a 15-yard pass to senior wideout Adam Thielen. A personal foul would move the Mavericks into SMSU territory before Wolf found junior wideout Ra’Shon Harper for 15 yards down to the SMSU six-yardline.
Wolf then used his feet to score a touchdown from six-yards out. Brockshus booted the extra point as MSU pulled within seven.
After forcing the Mustangs to punt Wolf and Thielen hooked up five times for 62 of the 70 yards on the Maverick drive – the last coming on an eight-yard touchdown strike with 46 seconds remaining. Brockshus was again true on the extra point and the two teams entered overtime tied at 24.
SMSU won the toss to start the extra session and elected to play defense. The Mavericks needed just one play as sophomore running back Andy Pfeiffer scampered 25 yards to give the Mavericks a brief lead of 31-24 after Brockshus PAT.
The Mustangs answered with a touchdown pass from Tyler Peschong to Cody Condon forcing a second overtime.
SMSU failed to score in the second overtime having a fourth-down pass dropped setting up Brockshus heroics.
"I am so proud of the way this team battled back," said acting head coach Aaron Keen. "Give SMSU a lot of credit, they played a heckuva football game this week. We will have to be better next week."
Thielen finished the game for Minnesota State with 11 catches for a career-high 167 yards and a touchdown while Wolf went 16-of-25 for 239 yards and a score. Pfeiffer accounted for 12 carries and 70 yards of rushing punching in two touchdowns.
The Maverick defense was paced by senior defensive end Earl Brooks and senior linebacker Marcus Hall-Oliver each of which had eight stops.
Minnesota State (7-0, 7-0 NSIC) travels to Winona State next weekend. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
