Box Score MARSHALL, Minn. – The Minnesota State Mavericks shook off a second-half comeback attempt by Southwest Minnesota State Saturday afternoon as the Mavericks defeated the Mustangs, 65-58.
Minnesota State enjoyed a 13-point lead at the break as two Mavericks finished the half in double-digits. The Mavericks connected on 14-of-30 (46.7 FG%) attempts in the half including 5-of-8 (62.5 FG%) from downtown compared to just 10-of-36 (27.8 FG%) by the Mustangs.
Freshman forward
Jamie Bresnahan led the Mavericks with 12 first-half points on 5-of-7 from the field including 2-of-2 from long range while senior forward
Laura Weber scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
Southwest Minnesota State scored seven second-chance points in the first half as it recorded 11 offensive rebounds compared to five by MSU.
MSU maintained a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half until SMSU’s Bree Holleman’s three pointer cut the lead to seven with 3:11 remaining.
The Mustangs late run would fall short, however, as senior guard
Jennie Noreen scored from just outside the lane before Weber recorded her only block of the game on a shot attempt by SMSU’s Courtney McCarthy.
Minnesota State would connect on 2-of-4 free throws in the game’s final 13 seconds which proved to be enough as the Mavericks won their sixth-consecutive game.
The Mavericks were led by Weber who finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds as she recorded her third double-double of the season. Bresnahan finished with 15 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
MSU finished the game 39.0 percent from the floor compared to just 33.3 percent by the Mustangs. SMSU outrebounded MSU, 49-44, while MSU recorded more assists (15-6), points in the paint (26-22) and bench points (13-12). The loss drops the Mustangs to 5-8 overall and 4-5 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.
The win marks the 100th in head coach
Pam Gohl's career and her 70th with the Mavericks. Her career record now stands at 100-94 while she is 70-31 with MSU.
Minnesota State (10-3, 6-3 NSIC) returns home for its next game as the Mavericks are set to host Northern State Friday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m.
