Box Score CROOKSTON, Minn. – A second-half surge sparked by freshman guard
Aubrey Davis helped lead the Mavericks to their fifth-consecutive win Tuesday night as they beat the Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagles, 78-76.
A three pointer by junior guard
Kirstin Nelson evened the game at 24 midway through the first half as neither team could pull away early. From this point, however, Crookston went on a 12-2 run opening its largest lead of the half at 36-26.
MSU would put a run of its own together over the course of the half’s final minutes as junior guard
Sarah Wiens scored five-straight points cutting the Mavericks deficit to three at 38-35. The Golden Eagles would maintain their three-point lead for the remainder of the half as MSU went into halftime trailing, 41-38.
Both teams shot well in the first half as MSU connected on 44.7 percent of its attempts compared to 53.6 percent from Crookston.
The second half started much like the first as the teams played to a tie at 55 through the first eight minutes. A run from each team was in order for the remainder of the game, however, as Crookston was first to see a double-digit lead when it used an 11-1 run over the next three minutes, taking a 66-56 lead.
The Mavericks clawed back over the next four minutes with a 10-1 run that was capped off by a three pointer by Davis which gave MSU the lead, 68-67.
Davis then scored the next three points for the Mavericks as she contributed nine straight points giving the Mavericks a four-point lead at 71-67.
Two ties and two lead changes would occur over the final 3:26 with the last lead change coming on a layup by junior guard
Jameila Hudnell with just 23 seconds remaining, giving the Mavericks the 76-75 lead.
MSU would ensure its fifth-consecutive victory as Davis and senior guard
Jennie Noreen each connected on a free throw while Crookston was only able to score one point in the game’s final minute and 20 seconds.
The win marks the 600
th in the program’s history as MSU now has an all-time record of 600-537 (.528).
Senior forward
Laura Weber led the Mavericks with 20 points on 10-of-19 from the field while adding five rebounds. Noreen and Davis also finished in double-digits as Noreen added 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists while Davis contributed 15 points, four steals and four rebounds.
Minnesota Crookston shot 48.2 percent compared to 46.4 by the Mavericks while it also outrebounded MSU, 40-31. However, the Golden Eagles were plagued by turnovers, committing 22 compared to just 10 by the Mavericks.
Three players finished in double figures for Crookston including Megan Eul who added 21 points, Brittani Wiese who scored 15 and Ashley Martell with 12 as the Golden Eagles fell to 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Minnesota State (9-3, 5-3 NSIC) returns to action Saturday when it travels to Marshall, Minn., to face Southwest Minnesota State. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
