Box Score Columbus, Ohio — Minnesota State lost to Ohio State 3-1 Friday night in Columbus, Ohio in the opening game of the two-game series.
 
After the Mavericks were outshot 11-6 in the first period, they headed to the locker room knotted up at 0-0 as MSU goaltender Danielle Butters made 11 saves in the period.
 
Late in the second period the Buckeyes broke the shutout at the 14:18 mark as Tina Hollowell to put OSU up 1-0. The Buckeyes went up 2-0 four minutes and 20 seconds later at the 18:38 mark of the second period on Ally Tarr goal, marking her 13^th goal of the season.
 
Minnesota State sophomore forward Tracy McCann scored her third goal of the season from Erika Magnusson to bring the Mavericks within one goal at 8:55 of the second period.
 
Even though MSU outshot the OSU 12-9 in the third, the Buckeyes found the back of the net with 1:23 left in the game. The final shots in the game were 36-27 in favor of Ohio State.
 
Minnesota State (7-18-0, 3-16-0 WCHA) and Ohio State (4-17-2, 3-14-0 WCHA) continue action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. (CST) at the OSU Ice Rink for the final game in the series.
