Minnesota State Falls For First Time in Nine Games

Box Score BEMIDJI, Minn. – Minnesota State was unable to win its ninth-consecutive game Friday night as the Bemidji State Beavers connected on two free throws with just 1.9 seconds remaining, defeating the Mavericks, 72-71.
 
Both teams came out on fire from long range in the first half as MSU connected on 7-of-15 (46.7 3FG%) while Bemidji State went 5-of-13 (38.5 3FG%).  The seven made three pointers was the most for the Mavericks in a first half since Feb. 11 of last season against St. Cloud State when they went 7-of-14 (50.0 3FG%).
 
Senior Jennie Noreen and sophomore Alli Hoefer each connected on 3-of-5 from downtown in the first half as Noreen led MSU with 13 first-half points.
 
The Mavericks would lead by as much as ten in the first half before BSU closed out the final eight minutes on a 19-9 run as MSU went into the break trailing by one, 36-35.
 
The second half wasn’t as kind to the Mavericks from three-point range as they went just 2-of-12 after beginning the game connecting of seven of their first ten three-point attempts.
 
Bemidji State would take a one-point lead with just 30 seconds remaining as Shannon Thompson connected on two free throws giving the Beavers a 70-69 lead.
 
MSU would regain the lead for the final time in the game with just 9.5 seconds remaining as Hoefer connected on a two-point jumper giving the Mavericks a 71-70 lead.
 
However, the lead would change one last time as Thompson drew a foul on her way to the basket with just 1.9 seconds remaining.  Thompson made both of her free-throw attempts, giving the Beavers the 72-71 lead, where the score would remain as MSU failed to get off a last-second shot.
 
The win improves BSU to 6-11 overall and 4-8 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference as it snapped its eight-game losing streak.  The Beavers were led by Morgan Lee who finished with 21 points on 8-of-13 from the field including 5-of-10 from long range.
 
The Mavericks were led by Noreen who tied her season-high with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting while she also recorded four rebounds and four assists.
 
Posting a career-high in points was Hoefer who finished with 15 while also contributing a career-high eight assists.  Senior forward Laura Weber finished with 12 points and five rebounds while freshman forward Jamie Bresnahan tallied 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.
 
Bemidji State held an advantage in shooting percentage connecting on 48.1 percent of its attempts compared to 42.2 percent by MSU.  BSU also outrebounded Minnesota State, 34-33, while the Mavericks committed five less turnovers (16-11).
 
Minnesota State (12-4, 8-4 NSIC) is back in action tomorrow afternoon when it travels to Duluth, Minn., to face the Bulldogs.  Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m.
