Mankato, Minn. ---  The game stood tied at the end of regulation, but Minnesota State could not hold off Nebraska Omaha’s power play in overtime as the visiting Mavericks claimed a 2-1 victory in a men’s  Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest played in Mankato Friday night.

Nebraska Omaha got on the board first at 7:26 first period when forward Matt White one-timed a shot from the slot past MSU junior goaltender Phil Cook.

Following a scoreless second frame, the Mavericks (Minnesota State) evened the score at 9:10 after freshman forward Jean-Paul Lafontaine put a rebound past Ryan Messa for his team-leading eighth power play tally of the year.  Lafontaine’s goal, his 12th of the season, sent the game into overtime.

In overtime Nebraska Omaha junior defenseman Bryce Aneloski scored the final goal on a power play when his shot from the point found its way through a maze of legs and sticks at 1:37 for the game-winning goal.

MSU owned a 41-37 advantage in shots on goal in the game. UNO freshman goaltender Ryan Massa was injured in overtime during a collision with a MSU player and freshman Dayn Belfour, who stopped one MSU shot in 54 seconds of action, was credited with the win.

With the loss Minnesota State dropped to 7-17-1, 3-13-1 WCHA on the season.  The Mavericks will look to even the two-game league series tomorrow night with a 7:07p.m. face-off scheduled for Verizon Wireless Center.
