Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State Mavericks have now won four-consecutive games as they defeated Minnesota State Moorhead, 64-58 Monday night in the team’s first game of the New Year.
It was all Minnesota State early in the first half as the Mavericks jumped out to a 15-4 lead. From this point, the Mavericks went on a 9-2 run which was capped off by a three pointer from freshman guard
Aubrey Davis.
The 18-point lead at 24-6 would be the largest lead of the half for MSU as senior forward
Laura Weber led all scorers with 14 first-half points.
Minnesota State Moorhead mounted a comeback over the half’s final nine minutes, outscoring MSU, 16-6 as the Mavericks went into halftime with a 32-25 lead.
The Mavericks were able to extend their lead to double-digits with 12:30 left before Moorhead inched its way back into the game.
The Dragons went on a 17-11 run, cutting the lead to just four at 50-46 as Angie Jetvig connected on two free throws with 5:29 remaining.
Both teams traded baskets over the next four minutes until Moorhead cut the lead to just two with a minute left.
However, the Dragons attempt of a comeback fell short as Minnesota State connected on five of its final six free-throw attempts to ice the 64-58 victory.
The Mavericks were led offensively by Weber who finished with 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting while she also contributed five rebounds and three blocked shots. Fellow senior
Jennie Noreen led the Mavericks with a career-high 13 rebounds while recording her second career double-double adding 13 points. She also contributed five steals and four assists.
Davis rounded out the trio of Mavericks in double figures with 10 points while recording a game-high six assists.
Jetvig led the Dragons with 18 points while pulling down a game-high 16 rebounds.
The Mavericks finished the night 35.3 percent from the field compared to just 29.8 percent by the Dragons. Minnesota State finished with three fewer rebounds than Moorhead (47-44) while committing six less turnovers (23-17) as the Dragons fell to 4-6 overall and 1-5 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Minnesota State (8-3, 4-3 NSIC) returns to action tomorrow when it travels to face Minnesota, Crookston with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
